I WAS WONDERING WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO START BEING A TRAINER. I AM WORKING TOWARDS STARTING MY OWN SMALL KENNEL AND WOULD LIKE TO START TRAINING SOME OF MY OWN DOGS EVENTUALLY INSTEAD OF SENDING THEM TO A PROFESSIONAL. IS THERE PROGRAMS OR SCHOOLS AROUND THE COUNTRY TO GO TO LEARN HOW TO TEACH PEOPLE HOW TO BECOME PRO. TRAINERS? OR HOW DID ALL OF YOU THAT TRAIN LEARN TO BE GOOD TRAINERS. I WOULD APPRECIATE ANY ADVICE OR RECOMMENDATIONS THAT YOU HAVE. THANKS FOR ALL YOUR HELP.

I don't train professionally, but I do know that I am a MUCH better trainer with my second dog than I ever was with my first (more patience). I now have two more and I would expect that my skills will continue to improve. When you deal with multiple dogs, you must learn to adjust your techniques accordingly...each dog has different temperments, styles, motivation, etc. The most important skill is to be able to "tap" into each dog and get the most out of them.
You might contact a pro in your area and see if he/she might let you help them out occasionally...
Good luck!

put yourself around a training group of people who know what they are doing and learn from them! Hands on experience is the best and quickest way to learn!! Kevin

| From what I've seen, most pro's were amatuer trainers that loved the game and eventually hooked up with a pro.
I know Evan Graham did it with Rex Carr and Danny farmer did it with Judy Aycock (amatuer trainer), thats pretty much the model. I thought I read that Danny Farmer was looking for a helper recently, try giving him a call.

Try finding a pro that may need some help. You may start with throwing bumpers but the knowledge you will gain in the long run will be very valuable. This can be good for the two parties involved. Good Luck.

You might try the HRC club in Sioux Falls. Seems to be a good support group that wants to see everyone do well. Google the HRC then look for the club contact person in Sioux Falls His name is Nelson I believe.

You may want to watch when Julie Knutson has another seminar, or another top trainer. I know the Minnesota training club has trainers in a number of times per year. Learning from a top trainer can give you insight into the similarities (and differences) of their styles. You may also want to read Julie's book which is excellent. It goes all the way from picking a pup to finished dog. I had a great trainer and did a good job with my last lab, but I know that using Julie's program I will be able to get the most possible from my dog. Good luck.
