11/19/2007 7:01 PM Alert

Rosco, Jedi, and Myself went out sunday around Fleming, Colorado to use the walk in program! Walked a 1/2 mile by 1/2 mile field for almost 3 hours and pushed out and watched fly out of range about 50 birds! I was starting to get alittle frustrated when I watched about 10 birds get up and land in a corner section of a pivot! And I new they had no place to go!!
So we finished up and went back to the truck and drove over to that corner!! As we were sloeing down ONE POPPED HIS HEAD UP!! They were still there!
I grabed my gun and the dogs jumped out and I took 2 steps into the field and they exploded!! One rooster went to the left and one to the right, both went down quickly Rosco retrieved the first one and Jedi retrieved the second!
as Jedi was retrieving the second 2 more got up (NO SHELLS IN GUN)!! Loaded my gun took 2 steps and another rooster got up and Bang we were done! Jedi picked up the 3rd bird !
That 1 minute walk sure made the 3 hours worth it! Next time about 5 to 7 people are coming along!! Here is a couple of pics of my boys!!

Outstanding Kevin! Great to see the grey beard still getting it done! To help with lost posts I try to 'copy' all the text prior to hitting submit-that way if the error occurs it is quick to paste the text back in and submit again-

Kevin,  I re-read your post and couldn't find where you had the cross-roads listed.  So if you could re-post that information that would be great.  If you only have the GPS co-ordinates that would be fine.

I am assuming you are doing the Walk-In-Program?

We just got back from the 10 day stint in S. Dakota.  The old-girl got caught in a fence and had to take some R&R but the pup is finally hitting here stride...just not pointing.  We found some older birds hiding away in some of the private land.  Those older birds always make me feel good about the dog work as they didn't get old by getting shot.  I think I have one that could be making a trip to the taxidermist.

I have heard the pheasants are thicker here this year.  I guess I better take some time and start chasing them.  The quail hunting has been good I just don't want to take too many of these guys as I love having the wild ones around.  Ducks were slower than I would have expected recently but things are looking brighter.

Now, gps co-ordinates would be great.

Scott

Steve,
This may be a silly question, or statement....depends on how you want to look at it....but those fields are bare...no wonder there are no birds in them...or am I not visualizing the picture correctly???

Jerry-Did I say quail.  I don't know what I was thinking...there aren't any quail in Colorado.  They have all migrated to Mexico and will only be back when hunting season is over.  Never seen quail migrate?...that's because they do it between 1 pm and 3 pm every night.....and they don't fly, they run.

Seriously, the quail hunting is nowhere near the much more famed areas in the country for quail hunting.  From what I understand Mr. Hoover (BFKHP) and the state of Georgia are much better places to chase the boogers.

SE Colorado has some blue quail (cotton-tops) and NE has some coveys of bobwhites that can be nearly impossible to find unless you know where you are looking.  When I hunt them I work hard to take very few and not over pressure the covey(s).  I will say this, there was one covey that we jumped this week (on a public SWA) that held at least 40 birds.

Sage pretty much 'zippered' here lower back leg.  It is healing nicely and she should be back in the saddle in another week or so.  In the meantime the pup is enjoying ALL of the work and finally figuring out why she was born.

We have family near Brookings in Flandreau, SD.  My brother-in-law farms and probably runs more pheasants thru his combine than I see in an entire year.  The pheasant hunting is always a nice Thanksgiving treat for my family.

I hope Jazzy is doing good?

Yes, Hope is a product of Sage x Jake.  They were born July, 2006.  I am not good at math but I think that makes her 16 months old.
