that you see or learn about when out hunting. The other day Taffey was having some very productive points and the birds were holding well in the snow covered terrain. We were pushing the high side of a sorghum patch when she locked up hard. After I finally got right in front of her, there was nothing visible..........which had been pretty much the case on all her previous points......those birds were really "hunkered down".
Before we continue with this particular point....on a side note......it has always amazed me how Taffey, Lick and Kooly could pick up the flight of a flushed bird out of chest high cover and take a straight line to the area of the fall for even birds that flare off at wild angles. How'd they do that?
So that gets us back to Taffey on point. When guiding we have this little thing where she flushes the bird when I'm ready. If you've ever stood in front of 3-4 clients who are out to shoot birds, you'll have a better appreciation for this technique. Anyway, I'm ready.......so Taffey moves up and does her little jump at the bird. I'm right there, front paws go in and her head immediately jerks straight up looking for the flush. I wish I had a picture of the look on Taffey's face......she was so sure about this one.
At least I learned first hand how they spot the flight of a flushed bird......they are looking up immediately. I saw Kooly one day literally jump above the sorhum like an antelope with his head swirling around like a periscope trying to zero in on the flight of a pheasant. However, this rooster must have just slipped away seconds before.....after getting over the fact that nothing went up, Taffey jumped on his trail and pinned him again about 50 yards away in another field. No snow and he probably would have been long gone. He couldn't stand the pressure of being pinned and flushed on his own. Big mistake.

Kwick, isnt it amazing how expressive a lab can be with its looks. I am constantly amazed at how Brady looks and me and my wife, looking like he understands everthing we are saying and just wishes he could talk back. I can only imagine the look on Taffeys face. I am sure it was priceless.
That is why we hunt with dogs isnt it? It is for me! Oh yeah, and you get more birds. That too. |
