Has anyboby in eastern Colorado or Western Kansas seen any start of the migration yet? I have been hearing that they are still south? |

Kevin,
I’ve been hearing reports there is flock after flock in the Las Animas area. A few thousand now showing up at Jumbo and along the Platte and really loaded up in Nebraska along the Platte. They are definitely on the move north.

| Sounds like a plan, I hope you do well. I may give it a try as well, I need to go up to the farm and take out a board in the DU pond that is starting to overflow. |

I always enjoy getting out with the dogs. Will be fun to see a bunch of different dogs at different levels. Taking the camera along, hopefully will get some good pics to post up.
See you Saturday! |

TB,
I believe they are on there way back North. On my way home yesterday I stopped at Empire and saw probably 5,000 mixed in with some Canada's. They usually are further East. Pruitt is an easy drive for me (20 minutes) and I can go take a look there this weekend.
I still miss duck season.

You guys might get some good info about the migration here:

or here:

Someday, before its all over for me, I hope to be in the upper midwest for a couple of weeks or a month in March, into April. Broken ankle last year, no reason to go south after OR/NV bird seasons ended this year. Maybe next.
Have a ball.
I forgot what winter was like until we got back to Anchorage. No wonder ol' Magnum is so grouchy!!

Sounds like a good idea Kevin but not so sure it would go over well, guess I better bring some steel just in case.
Hey Scott nice to see you posting. When did you move to Ft Morgan and how was your season? Are you coming to the training day on Saturday? How's that GMPR of yours doing, hopefully you've been wearing him out.

TB,
We moved to Ft. Morgan about two years ago, we absolutely love it here.
I do miss duck season and we had an exceptional year. I tried to eat the ducks as fast as I shot them but still ended up with a freezer full to take to the butcher for sausage. All said and done I had 40 pounds of duck (breasted out) that came back as 80 pounds of sausage. Care for any Teriyaki sticks?
Not much of a goose hunter but love to watch the migration patterns.
I am to busy to train this Saturday but would love to participate in the future. What are your arrangements? Is it a private party on private land or is it open for anyone. I have access to several farmers properties and of course the SWA's can make good training grounds if it isn't nesting season (gotta protect the future). I have two pups in training and the old girl that could pick up a duck or two if given a chance.
BTW, being a Civil Engineer I have always enjoyed your dogs name, isn't it Pi R Squared with call name Pi?

The Rocky Mtn Pointing Lab Club is starting back up. If you sent Tom Osborne your email address he will get you on the mailing list. The first training day in tomorrow at Julie and Paul's place. If things change or you have a little free time you should stop by for while. Additional grounds and places to train would be great and I'm sure appreciated by the club! Here's link with some information and Tom's email address. http://www.americanpointinglab.com/site/Forum/tabid/68/forumid/1/postid/5324/view/topic/Default.aspx
Your right in the heart of things of there. Sounds like you had a wonderful season. I sure miss the duck season as well, we had a whole lot fun. Have you noticed that pile of corn at farm a couple of miles west of Ft Morgan just south of I-76? In early November it must have been 100ft high and a 100 yards long. By the end of December it looked like the top had been chopped in half. By the end of January there were scare crows on each end. A real haven for the ducks and geese, many time several thousand ducks and geese all over and around the pile of corn.
I spent quite a bit of time at a place right on the Morgan/Washington County line. We've eaten a whole bunch of ducks, gave away as many as I could and my freezer is still pretty jammed full. May have to take some to the butcher for sausage like you did. I'm not much of a goose hunter either. Did get a few pass shooting while hunting ducks. Borrowed a few decoys and went the last weekend for geese and scratched out 4 of em.
How old are the pups and what's the breeding? You got it right with Pi's name. My daughter who was a math major at CU came up with the name. I've been trying to come up with another one along the same line but keep drawing a blank. As an Engineer if you have any ideas please let me know. Will wait a few years to get a pup until Pi starts to slow down. Pretty easy and nice only taking care of one dog, she gets a lot of attention.
Have fun with those pups!

Here's one for you, Randy. More esoteric than Pi but your daughter should absolutely love it, I'm sure. Blaise (pronounced blaze) was Pascal's first name. If you read up on Pascal it might seem appropriate to you outside the math/physics connection as well.
I'd consider it for my next pup, but I could get in trouble with my daughter's next door neighbor. He studied math in college and named his son Blaise. We visit here a lot!

That pile of corn has been fun to watch. The scarecrows blew over and they finally parked a pickup on the field side to keep any hungry's out. The progression to eating was funny also. Each day the flock on the ground would get closer to the pile. I felt bad for the geese as all of the fields were covered and they did not have many options for food. Anyway, one day I drove by and the pile was completely black with Canada's and the field had geese covering 3/4 of it. It was quite a sight to see and a feast was definately taking place.
So, you must either be a member of Indian Meadows, YZ or have a really good friend. We would scout a lot but Cottonwood treated us well (had a funny Llama story I should tell you) and so did Union Tract when it had water. I missed having Pruit full of water but hopefully that issue is getting better and the drought is fading away.
The stud dog was Jake (Elcanan Jumpin' Jake) who is a 1.5XGMPR and has some MH passes. Owned by Paul Durant out of Colorado Springs. Field Trial lines that point. Great dog with a ton of drive and style.
My Sage is the daughter of Dale Merrit's Bear. You know the usuals...Cajun, Grits, etc......
So far I am happy with the pups and can't wait to get them ready to hunt next year. They are about 6 months old and all yellow (don't hold that against me). I am training the male that is going to Idaho when basics are complete. I kept one female that I may sell as a started dog in the fall. All of the dogs except one went to working homes so I was very happy. Just a great hobby gone terribly wrong.
So back to the subject at hand. Saw more white geese at Empire today. I was chasing a coyote that had been harassing them earlier in the week (no I didn't get him) but the Snows were there. They are also at Jumbo but those I talked to said it is difficult to keep the Canada's out of the decoys long enough to get the Snow's to come in. They shot ONE Snow but could have shot hundreds of Canada's. Why can't it be the other way around????
Was at Kiowa Creek today. You know it is a good day when the guides are pulling out camera's to take pictures of your dog on point.
Oh, we could have fun with the math/engineering names. Come to think of it, Julie is an engineer and may have some good input. Might be fodder for another thread......

I forwarded your note to my daughter Jere, this was her response, “Piscal has a formula…I know it well Dad….Delta is a good name or Omega, Alpha”. May not be as difficult as I thought, you engineers, mathematicians and physics teachers think differently than the rest of us! It will be a while before I get another pup, so have plenty of time to ponder.
We only had one small flock of about 75 snows 150 yards in the air come anywhere close to us. Spotted a few other larger groups in the distance. Didn’t really expect to shoot anything mainly went up for a couple of work days. We pulled a couple of boards to start draining the DU pond, filled the quail feeders and released a few quail. I’ll post up more with some pictures under the “bird restoration” thread.
Holly cow did the ducks ever put on a show. Pintails, teal, gadwall, wigeon, mallards and an array of diver ducks all day long! Worked on my duck calling a little bit, still have a long ways to go. The first picture is a view of the pond from the front porch of the farm house (the second body of water in the distance, first body is a little pond at the ditch), second picture is at the ditch gateway near the pond.
