Just a quick addition , I work with Chase once a week thru Habic (human animal bond in colorado) in his school. He's an awesome boy and doing a science project on dog behavior and training and needs references and expert opionions. So your help with his report would be greatly appreciated. If you have a pictures on training that would be great too! Thanks everyone, Kevin

Chase,
Kevin tells me your doing a good job training with Roscoe man. He teaches you how to train and you teach him how to read and write? You must be a good trainer. I think Roscoe would tbe easier to teach than Kevin? Just kidding.
I'm a pro trainer with Poudre River Gundogs. I will try to give you some information that might help. We usually teach sit usings a choke chain and a lead for teaching both commands.I'm sure your familiar with these tools working with Kevin?
You need to first get your dog use to having a lead and collar on. That usually is done while taking your dog for a walk out in the field and just letting him drag it around while your taking a your walk.
Once your dog is use to the collar and lead it is on to the next step. I teach heel before sit. I also Always start a training session having some fun with the dog. Throw a couple of happy bunppers before you start. This will give your dog a good attitude abut working with you and going to work. With the lead and collar on I start walking forward and give the heel command. Initially I just want the pup or dog to know that heel is a place they need to be in. Not too demanding at first. As time goes on I expect them to be in just the right place all the time. That includes when I turn left or right or going in the opposite direction. When you make your turns give the command heel, give a quick little tug on the lead if your dog lags behind you on the turns, and give the command heel again when he is in the right position. He will learn pretty quickly to stay with you no matter what direction your going in. Give him a lot of verbal praise when he tries and gets it right.
With sit use the lead and collar as well. Your dog should be healing by now fairly well. On all your commands in training when teaching give the command, show them what you want and then give the command again. This is the best way to communicate with your dog. Black and white, right and wrong.
While walking at heel stop, give the command sit, show your dog how to sit, and give the command sit again. If you lift up on your lead and push down on you dogs behind he will sit. Again give lots of praise when he does it right. You may have to show your dog several times how to sit. Dont give up he will get it.
Keep your trainng sessions short. About 5 to 10 minutes max. Start on a good note and end on a good note. That means start out having fun with fun bumpers and end when your dog is progressing a little bit more each day. He will be heeling and sitting before you know it.
Good luck Chase with your project and your dog!
Gary

| Hey Chase,
The best thing to do is not allow your dog to do it in the first place as a puppy. Now that he is older it is a little more difficult because he thinks it is OK? The key is that you need to be consistent. Dont allow him to jump up on you or anyone else from this point on. The best thing to do is to bump him in the chest with your knee if he comes up to you and jumps up. Do it as hard as you need to until he gets the idea. I would also tell him No and down when you give him a knee. You need to also tell everyone else that is around him to do the same thing. That includes anyone who comes over to visit. Once he figures out the rules are the same from everyone he should stop doing it.
Another thing you could do is use a rope and a choke chain. Have a rope long enough that when he tries to jump up you can give it a good tug and have the person he wants to jump up on tell him NO and Down. Figure out when and where he usally does it. Set him up for a learning experience. For example, if he jumps up on people at the door have a couple people come to the door and teach him the lesson he needs to learn with the rope or the knee.
Good luck.
