So often I have wondered how far they run on a typical day. So I got a hold of a Garmin GPS unit for joggers called the forrunner and stuck it on his collar. This was on that SD trip. This was not a good test because 1, we did not have
any grass fields for him to stretch out in- Only very narrow strips and ravines and road ditches, PLUS that was an abbreviated day because of the Van fuel pump. Even so we logged 14 miles on him that day. I would guess that on a good day in ks he goes 3 times that far...never got to try it yet in ks crp fields

Here is whats interesting...Garmin just announced a new product- its called the Astro, that is a gps for hunting dog monitoring. I am not sure of all the functions yet but it sounds slick. One part is a collar with the gps engine that sends signals back to a handheld unit that shows you where the dog is. There is also a beep function that goes off when they stop-as when on point! This might be a neat item to play with ...http://www.garmin.com/products/astro/ I wonder if it calculates the distance travelled-it should...

Steve,  keep us updated when you do a test out in KS Grass lands.  I have been curious of this myself.  It would be cool to know how much I walked and how much the dog traveled to compare.  The new GPS unit looks like it was designed for the field trialers and the Pointer dogs.  If my lab gets out that far we got issues.   : )

Got out on Thurs before the storm. Had a late start though-the paws hit the dirt at 9:30. Also it was crazy hot and sunny ahead of the front at almost 70' and full sun when we started. The 1st field was 80 acre crp and we got into birds. We spend an hour and a half there-had to stop and rest in the field as the little girl KC got herself into an overheated condition! She was flying around the whole time up to that point. Cletis was fine as he paces himself pretty good. The heat did take a lot out of him though-you could tell some serious rest was needed after that 1st field. He logged 5.9 miles at that 1st stop. So I did a lot of driving after that to check out some places much farther north that I had never been to. When we got out the temps had dropped over 30' as we had crossed into the approaching front. We hit a number of smaller places checking things out. All in all he logged 17 miles. He was on the ground for 4hrs 15min. Hopefully next time it will be cooler and i will run him without the booties as it seems they are taking a little out of him too.

Ever since we hunted a field a mile from our house, rosco seems to think he can go back and go hunting without me. So the garmin product might do very well in tracking him down when he gets out of the fence and goes hunting without me!!!!!

Well Mother Nature continues to screw up our pheasant season. Got out early ahead of the approaching storm. The weather guy said it was not going to snow till 5pm. We hit that same 80 acre field we have been starting in as sunup. I could tell from the tire trackes that it was hit the day before-and it showed as found a lot less birds. The temps were nice and cool -around 27' I believe. Cletis logged in 8.75 miles and KC logged 9.11 miles. We worked that field very thoughly! Then we moved to a second place. We ended up having to stop and get the heck out of there at 11:30 cuz the snow hit and hit hard. Cletis had logged 13miles , the unit on KC lost battery power so no data....The trip home was treacherous with cars and trucks crashed all along I 70. Only One last weekend left of the season The weather this year has really been a drag on our hunting...I am looking for a 1996 Suburban with 4x4 and will have that in place by next year.

Well yesterday was probably the last day out this year and again we did not get in a full day. Cletis logged in 18 miles and KC 13-she was not run in the 1st
field. By mid afternoon the conditions became too brutal so we headed home.

Sounds like something useful for free "roading", too. The odometer on the ATV is easy to read, but I'm sure the dogs cover a lot more ground. How much more?
