We got a nice present and reward on the 28th. Celebrating Pi's 5th birthday with our first band on a money duck. Double banded greenhead with a $50 reward.

Since I'm not a waterfowler (yet!!), please explain the significance of the reward (who offers it and why). Also, why would a duck be "double banded"?

I think I answered my own questions by doing an internet search on banded ducks. I would assume that the second "bander" would report the band number on the first band so that the duck's progress could be tracked to the point that the second band was added.

Are there rewards for all bands or just some?

Has anyone ever gotten a duck with more than two bands?

I don't know Rob but kind of assumed the same as you. There was a 1-800 number to report the bands and I did. She couldn't give me any information but they will be sending me a certificate and thank you letter. The certificate will include information on when and where it was banded. Not sure if I will get two certificates or just one along with a check.

When I gave her the last digit on the reward band, I could hear in the background her computer make a ka ching, ka ching sound, just like the slots.

Rob, Banding birds, is a way of tracking migration paths, age of bird, species etc. Reward bands, hence the "double band" is a very rare thing, especially on a duck. Not all banded birds have a reward band.
One band is the tracking and the other one is a "Reward Band". I cant remember the exact numbers of reported bands Vs. amount of birds banded, but the number of bands reported is significantly lower, the reward paid by(I think)the US Department of the Interior, as an incentive to report the band number.. Both bands are put on at the same time. The place where shot or found is the only way to tell point A to point B.
I shot a Double Banded Mallard on Dec 9,2006 info says The Mallard was banded in Alberta Canada in 2002.. Encoutered(Shot) in Brigham Utah, 2006
Some people never get a band their whole lives,(took me 16 years for my first) others might get a few here and there.. either way, its a very cool thing!

TB, let us know when you recieve the certificate, along with the info.Congratulations!
You should see the certificate within a couple of weeks, I've heard the money can take up to 6 months.

Matt
