With all of the snow that we've been getting here in Colorado, we've been feeling pretty cooped up for the past week.  Since it looked like we were gonna get nailed with another dumping of snow, I took a chance and went out yesterday!

I had a buddy in town who wanted to go out hunting during his visit over the holidays (he's being deployed back to Iraq in March for tour number two) so we chose to go out even though the conditions would be less than ideal.

The snow was knee deep in most areas and very crusty.  It was probably the worst conditions I've ever hunted in.  The birds were running fast and on top of the snow while we tried to plow our way through.  Maverick "bunny hopped" all day long and did his best to find us some birds.  While the day was exhausting for us and the dog, I was extremely proud of Mavericks heart.  He pounded snow all day long (bloody paws and belly too ).

The pheasant were running at least 200 yards ahead and we just couldn't get them to sit down.  It was kind of interesting being able to see the birds so well with all of the snow.  They sure do see you coming from a long way away!  We spotted several chukar a couple of hundred yards ahead of us and we were able to plow our way towards them and eventually cut them off and get them to sit down.

All told our final count was 1 pheasant, 7 chukar and 2 quail.  Now we can sit by the fire for the rest of the weekend and watch this next blizzard box us in.  But at least we got out before that happens!

Yeah Staunch, it was. Shoot me an email if you'd like to go out there sometime. The snows gonna have to melt quite a bit first though!

Keskam, what a great action shot. Was that during this recent snowfall?

NO,THE PICTURE WAS EARLIER IN THE YEAR. SOMETIMES I JUST LET MY SON AND SONS IN LAW SHOOT THE BIRDS AND ALL I TAKE IS MY CAMERA. I ENJOY WATCHING THE DOGS WORK MORE THAN SHOOTING THE BIRDS! THATS ONE OF THE REASONS I GOT INTO HUNT TESTS AND APLA IS BEING ABLE TO WORK THE DOGS YEAR ROUND. KEVIN

I like to watch the dog work too. However it will be a few more years before my kids can take over the shooting duties and let me carry a camera!

It was fun, made it home before Christmas just in time to get the stomach flu and recoved in time to head out again for 3 days. Will post up a new thread on one special day last week.

Is there any concern that all that snow in CO, KS, NE may hurt the bird population?  Was it bad enough to kill off birds?

I haven't heard any official report, but in my opinion...yeah I think it will hurt quite a bit. The place that I hunt is a "preserve" where a lot of the birds are released, so I can't use that as a basis for the wild bird survival, but a lot of the quail that I hunt out there is wild and they are finding quite a few dead ones in huddled masses.

The snow is so deep that I can't imagine the birds can find any cover whatsoever which would make them pretty exposed to the elements as well as easy targets for predators not to mention finding food. We're getting a few days this week in the 50's before the next 6-12" is expected to start on Thursday (this one is coming with some pretty frigid temps. It's gonna make it hard to hunt the rest of this year!

The snow will no doubt hurt the upland bird populations. I did hear quail calling on the Platte last week which is encouraging. Also hear a few pheasants crowing which is also encouraging. Did not pursue either, stuck with duck hunting. Rob you need to take up waterfowl hunting. It was fast and furious on a warm water slough last week. Ducks couldn't get in there fast enough on Saturday. Phase 3 of the blizzards in CO

Trout,

I'd love to try waterfowling. However, I don't know the first thing about it. I'd need to hook up with someone experienced (hint...hint). If you ever feel like giving a "rookie" an opportunity to tag along, let me know! Anything you can hunt from the comfort of a chair sounds good to me!

Wasn't taken that way at all Rob, I'd take you along if I could. I've been hunting as a guest for the last 7 years on a nice stretch of the Platte. I'm learning the ropes but far from experienced and my calling is weak at best.

You need to hook up with Jeff (camel clutch), he was at the CO meeting. He knows what he's doing, lives in Parker and looking for some hunting partners. We'll see what we can do early next season on some public grounds. I'm pretty well committed for the rest of the season, though passed on this weekend due to the severe temps.
