Dec 9 2006, I debated on going out this day. We (my brother and I) had plans to go hunt some ducks in the morning, but the marshes here were mostly frozen solid and hardly any open water at all. We had been scouting the night before and didn’t see much flying at all, if anything at that. We chose to play it by ear and would get together in the morning. The next day I woke up, loaded the dogs in the truck, gathered my gear and went to pick him up. At the last min he backed out, thinking it wouldn’t be any good. I decided to go solo, loaded up the sleds with my gear and made the 2-3 mile trek across the ice. I found a small patch of open water tossed 5-7 decoys in and hunkered down in the sled with a couple pieces of fast grass thrown over me. Soon after, a small flock of mallards came in and I pulled one Drake down. An hour or so after the first flock, a lone single appeared and decoyed in nicely, one shot, and he hit the ice. Sent Lucky on the retrieve, and when he returned, I couldn’t believe what I saw. A Double Banded Mallard! One band had the tracking number; the other one is a $100 reward band! I recieved the certificate and this big green head was banded in Tilley, Alberta 8/27/2002.. I suppose he made a few journeys before he decided to fly within 30yrds of my gun. Kinda sad in a strange sort of way. This is the first and only banded duck I have shot (so far). 16 years of hunting waterfowl and I hit the money bird . At least their wasn't a despute to who actually shot the bird .
The Bounty on his head,is claimed!
