We got going early and went to the same spot we saw lots of birds on opening day. Steve was being real quite and even wore camo instead of orange. I had on my new orange booties and me and KC both had new Ecollars too that Santa dropped off early! Well I could tell we were gonna get into birds as soon as I hit the ground. It was all Elbows and Assholes as we got going.

Steve had a good plan-We pushed them Roosters diagonally across the field towards the corner. I pointed out a bird problem and they started to bust!

Steve did a lot of  Shooting. Some times he yelled “HEN” but mostly “NO BIRD” I don’t like it when he says that! He muttered something about having a “Blocker” and the said he was sorry to me and KC as we could have limited out right there and then if he hit them. We worked the field more and  KC and I pinned a Rooster and he hit that one good. So at least we got one out of that. When we got back to the van he put his contact lens in and we figured that things would get better now. We went to another place just a short drive away and it was a big mile deep place we been to before. We worked it all the way back and on the way found a few Hens. Then worked it back and we chased a Rooster for over a hundred yards. Steve did not do a good job of keeping up on that one and even though he took a shot he again yelled “NO Bird”. By now we had covered a lot of ground and it was warming up and we were slowing down and drinking lots of Steve’s water too! We loaded up and moved to another spot.  I pointed out a quail problem-Steve usually does not shoot them and let them go. But one flew the direction we were going so when I pointed it he shot it for me cuz I was wanting to taste some feathers. Then as we pushed along we started getting into big bird action again.  Lots of hens gave us plenty of action. I kept pointing out bird problems..

And Steve kept either yelling “Hen-No Bird” or if he shot he would just yell “No Bird”. This was getting old to say the least! Never saw him shot so many times without hitting them.We were all tired so the plan was to drive pretty far to get some rest in and maybe hit another spot as we worked our way back to home…..Then something happened. As it turned out as it thawed the road turned to thick mud! We were stuck sideways on the road. After a long time he got it back on the road and then stopped and walked away to check out the road. The mud was so sticky he would not let us go out in it

The mud was so sticky that the front wheels would not always turn making keeping on the road a problem. Steve considered staying there until the morning hoping the road would re freeze! Thankfully he went for it. We had 3 miles of this road to go to get to pavement! You could hear the motor straining and mud flying and we were all over the place but kept it out of the ditch and made it home. Steve decided to just go home at this point. We were all glad of that cuz it meant we would get fed and I could take these silly booties off!

So it is a MERRY CHRISTMAS after all !

Nice Pic's! Hat's off to you for being able to get these pic's while hunting and handling two dogs at the same time. You have a pretty solid reason for missing a few birds, but the pointing pic's in the field last forever. I assume this is in Kansas?

Stu,  he is going to need a 4 wd van because otherwise he would not be able to bring the kitchen sink and extra fuel pumps with him.

Bruce- Using the camera excuse did cross my mind-certainly did have a LOT going on with using the new 2 dog collar system for the 1st time...And that Little KC is really zipping thru the fiields now! You get them going different directions and it gets real interesting fast. But in the final analysis ya can't hit what you don't see and I just wasn't seeing well that day.- Yes it was Kansas-I told ya to leave those stinky ducks alone and come out!

Joe/Stu- You are both right on! All I need is about an extra $30k and my dream machine- Full size Chevy van with the Quigley 4x4 conversion would be in the driveway. Someday maybe...But I should have a good 272k miles left on the current fuel pump ;)

Jake...Those are Dog Booties. What usually limits us is him wearing thru his pads and or getting into sandburrs. So after lots of shopping and research I found a place www.dogbooties.com and have a couple different sets that we use. Really come in handy-only sorry it took me so long to get around to doing it. After they are "installed" I put a wrap of 100mph tape around the top-otherwise they will get lost.

I know what they are, my post was mostly tounge in cheek. Seems odd that you are experieincing issues with pad wear in that terrain and that part of the country. I never have had an issue with sand Burrs the dogs seem to deal with them on thier own. only early in the season do the burrs seem to be a problem, by the middle of the season the dogs pads seem to shed most of them. What aprt of the countyr do you usually hunt. Have you tried using tuff-foot or Pad-kote?

OK Steve, get me some of those dog shoes and I'll get you a pair of those white gardening gloves of mine that you are so fond of.
