Just got back from South Dakota pheasant hunting...It was GREAT....weather was a bit too warm for the dogs and the hunters....mid 70's by the afternoons... we limited out early two of the 3 days...but had to work fairly hard to limit out the last day...

Ellie did great...she's really coming around...She had some nice points the first day...but after that it was hell bent for leather to beat the other dogs to the bird....something I'm going to be working on this fall /winter...

On the 2nd day we found two dead bucks locked together...a big 10 and a really nice 9 pointer...they had obviously been fighting to get free from each other for a long time...the dry river bottom where we found them was all tore up...the bucks had literally dug a hole in the dirt as the fought...

You sure don't see that everyday!  Were they still quite locked when you handled them?

Stuw, glad you had a good hunt. That is certainly a once-in-a-lifetime find. On one of our goose properties in northern Indiana the owner found the same situation in the pond last fall, they fell through the ice. Had full body mounts made that are on display at a local fish and wildlife area.

Couldn't you find a respectable pink upland jacket?

Rob...there was no budging these two racks...its like they were super glued together....

Bruce..after calling the DNR..the land owner cut the heads off..and is going to have a european mount made....I personally would have had the full shoulder mounts done...and I would have worn my stylish pink upland coat..but Julie wasn't hunting with us.....

Bruce, my thoughts exactly. Stu could have looked better than any Filson or Orvis catalog if he had just dressed the part. That's a sad story. I can't imagine the waning hours of those two critters......

It is sobering to think that they BOTH perished in the fight. In the situation I referenced earlier, the locked bucks broke through the ice and drowned. I have seen other mounts where the surviving buck carried around the "loosers" rack. Fight must have been about as even as it could get.

Also amazing that you found them before the coyotes did. Not to get all CSI about it but do you think it just happened the previous evening? That is, Stuw, when do you profesionally estimate the time of death?

Bruce its hard to say...my guess is the 9 pointer on the left of the top picture was probably dead a day longer than the 10 pointer on the right...who probably died the night before we found them....coyotes hadnt touched either yet...but it did look like a badger had been there...since part of the 9 pointer was buried...

I edited the picture for Julie...

I should also add....that I had Dragon with me in South Dakota...my Sage x Quiver pup...every day I took her out and let her play with wild pheasants...alot of the birds wouldnt hold....but the ones that did...she pointed with style...just like her momma....she's got a natural talent...thats for sure...

Stuw, that's what future GMPR's do.

You are stylin' brother. And still legal with just the right amount of orange.
