Bruce, I heard that same report from a lot of folks that were up
there for the opener or soon there after. I am hoping they get a
lot more of the corn out before the 5th of Nov when I head up.
Looks like you had fun anyway.
I just got back from Nebraska for their opener. Hunted SE NE and
we saw way more quail than we did Pheasants but managed to kill a few
pheasants and we just about got our limit of quail. We should
have had a limit if we knew how to shoot. Sent plenty of lead
down range but did not always connect. I think we busted 11
coveys at final count. That was just a day and a half of
hunting. It got too dang hot today to hunt past noon today.
The dogs did great. I need to teach that knot head Brady to stop
charging through the Barb Wire fences though. He got a couple of
minor cuts on the bellly and the front of his legs. He is like a
bull in a china shop when he is birdy.

Bruce we haven't had much problem filling. I have guided 6 days and longest outing has been five hours. But where I am guiding most of the corn is out. Here is a pic of yesterday's hunt.

Brad, looks like the bird hunting was good but the accomodations look a little sparse for a pay hunt. I would be ok with the rustic enviorment but some windows would be nice and the chuck wagon looks like it has seen better days.
Seriously though, that sure is beautiful country. I like those old homesteads.

The bird numbers are good. Whenever we pushed stripped out corn we had good shooting on ringnecks and huns. They were just pushing hard to get the corn out. I think a week or even a few days would have made a world of difference. I like shooting birds but half (or more) of the fun is watching the dogs do their thing, and that's hard to do in standing corn.
Seems like the only thing that educates a dog on barbed wire is a couple of run-ins. Cody and Diesel are pretty hard charging dogs in the field but they have also each been ripped up pretty good in the past and now know to take it easy around fence rows.
Brad, that setting looks like a Pheasants Forever Print. I may have to take a trip out just for the photography. I have some pics of your little girl (Misty?) that we brought out. I'll e-mail them. I still think I should have just brought her home with me - Cody throws yellow |

Hey Joe this old homestead is a honey hole for phesants. There is a dug out right behind the homestead that always holds a couple of hundred birds in the cat tails.
Bruce Misty is doing great. Little short on time to work with her much for a couple more weeks but she travels with and is showing a ton of point for eight weeks.

Stuw,
Let us know how it goes. You will notice that I finally got a topper for my P/U. So now you don't have to blow me crap about hauling my dog around in an open pet porter . Spoiled brown dog still rides in the cab most of the time. How can you share your fries if they are all the way in back?
Brad, I'm with Joe - you might want to think about upgrading the "standard" accomodations a little. Looks like that place has more issues than even duct tape can fix. |
