Well, Maverick and I are off to find the last dove in Colorado this morning.  The cooler weather and moisture that we've be getting has not kept the dove population here over the past week or so!

But we're going to give it a try anyway.  I can't believe opening day has arrived.  Good luck to everyone else today.  Have fun and be safe.

Rob, you should come to Missouri, they are thick as flies here.  I am not going to get to hunt until Monday after the test in IA.  I heard that IA wont even let you shoot doves.  Some sort of weird law.  Go figure.

Good luck

It is opening day here in Oregon as well and I sit here in the office.....
After two weeks off to make our physical move from Ohio to Oregon I just can't take another day off right now.
But I will be hitting it hard after we get settled!
Happy hunting.

It was a great opening day for Dove in Missouri. Although it took me almost an additional hour compared to my hunting buddies we did all limit out by 8:30am. Joe, Iowa considers Dove a song bird. I grew up in Iowa and did not realize what fun Dove hunting can be. My understanding of the story is that the wife of the Governor loved the song of the Dove and exercised her wifely influence to get the law passed no dove hunting.

I shot my first dove to today - wow, so much fun! 3 birds in an hour - plus the 5 sneak-attacking-dive-bombers that I missed. OK... I'm going to be honest - those were actually the first wild birds I've ever shot. The only other wing shooting I've done so far is at the pigeons that my pup got up, after I threw a stick at their perch in the tree. Bird hunting is fun! Now I know why I got into this whole thing in the first place (actually, its just an excuse for the whole dog aspect of it, but what a great excuse it is!). Goose season opens up in a bit too, maybe I'll even see what waterfowling's all about!

Rob, come on out to Eastern Colorado.  We consistently shoot dove into late September.  Obviously they thin out a bit but we can still get into them.  Ya just have to know the farmer growing that sunflower field where they hang out.

It will warm back up and the ones coming thru will hang up.

Can't wait for the Teal season coming up in just over a week.  It just seems like it is to long between seasons.

Well we pretty much got "skunked" yesterday.  I guess it rained really hard the night before because the standing water in the fields was unbelievable!

We had to walk a pretty good way from where we parked and all of the "dry" creekbeds were flowing with knee deep water!  After crossing the creeks and slopping through the mud, we were eaten alive by mosqitos.

We took a few dove, but no where near our limit.  I took the opportunity to work on Maverick's line manners and steady to wing and shot drills.

We will probably go back out towards the end of the season if the weather holds out.

The place I hunt will open up for pheasant (and chukar and quail) in early October (weather permitting).  I can't wait to start hunting pheasant again.  This will be Maverick's second full season on upland game and I can't wait to see him mature!  Yesterday he pointed a beautiful rooster.  I was so suprised I almost shot it!

If Doves even "think" it will get cold 'next week', they leave this week. When we lived in Ft.Collins CO, we hunted the wheat fields East of Ft.Collins When the weather was co-operative, we would sometimes get 200 doves in a season. When the weather was bad we were lucky to get a couple dozen.
We have very few doves in N.E.WA (lots in the center of the state though) and we always mahage to get enough for a couple meals, but it's nothing like the dove hunting we had in CO............But If given the chice, I'd rather hunt Grouse than Doves anyway, but doves sure are a kick and a great way to go through a lot of shells.

I couldn't find any doves this morning, actually I saw two on the highway just as I was leaving but I just couldn't hit em with the car.

Hey Doc,
did you guys have fun yesterday? I had one of those nights that I am probably going to want a re-do up in the deer stand. Had a couple bucks underneath me but the big guy was at 40 yards and his brother was at 20, they were nice deer but the one at 20 was a little more spindly. I drew after thinking about it for a bit but he was in a bad body position, he never did present a quality opportunity after I drew, oh well. It's always a blast to see the deer anyway.

Rion, the spindly one will eat just as good as the bigger one.

They haven't all left CO. I got into the largest concentration of doves I've ever seen. So good I went back Saturday a.m. prior to heading for the mtns in search of grouse. Had a marathon weekend between dove and grouse hunting, driving to Eastern CO twice then heading for the mtns. Got into some grouse on a couple of short walks. Pi and I were both too beat up to push it. Will probably head back up Friday evening for the weekend.

Pi with 2 limits of dove, Friday a.m.

I saw all of the standing water you are talking about Rob, you just needed to head East another 50 miles or so. There were fewer doves on Sat than Friday but still thousands of doves around. The way they were bunched up they are probably in Southern CO or TX by now or at the very least the Arkansas Valley.

Saw this group of wild turkeys as well as another group on an unnamed small river bed in Eastern CO

Sounds like I was just in the wrong place and the wrong time!  I would like to head back out again, but with the test this weekend, I probably won't make it this weekend.

Someday I would love to hunt grouse.  Since I've never done it, I have a lot to learn.  I am building a house up in Dillon, so maybe I can find a place to hunt grouse near that area.

I've been in the wrong place at the wrong time many times Rob!

Yes there are grouse in the Dillon area. The area I'm hunting is about 50 miles from Dillon. There are also ptarmigan not far from Dillon. Tough to hunt though, they like to hang out above timberline. The season for ptarmigan and teal opens on Saturday, thought about going for ptarmigan but will stick with hunting grouse. Picked up a duck stamp just in case I run into some teal. Never know where you might find them.
