I found out yesterday that I was lucky enough to get drawn for a prairie chicken tag.  After I was done calling hunting buddies to rub it in, it dawned on me, I have no idea how you hunt them.  I've done some research this morning and it seems that one of the better ways is to pass shoot them between areas where they are roosting and feeding.  Is this the most productive way to hunt them or is it possible to hunt them with a dog, or is it pretty difficult to do?  I've read that they are very wary of anything walking.  What kind of cover do they prefer, do they search out high grounds or lower grounds?  It is a five day season that runs in the middle of October.  I am hoping to make at least one scouting trip before the season opens more if I can sneak away.

Any advice or words of wisdom would be apreciated.

Jay

Lab Guy- This will not be much help. I have had my PL go on point and i was plenty close. We had pushed them for a ways before they held. They flushed as soon as he struck his point. The 1st time it happened i had no idea what the bird was. The second time the darn thing actually was mumbling a soft chicken like cluck as it flew-thats when i realized it was a prarie chicken- i yelled at my buddy to take it! but he did not feel it was in range so he did not shoot. when we got back to the van and read the rules it was a good thing-the chicken season ends earlier then the pheasant season in KS! But now i know where to go to try and get one-if i do i will mount it if not to shoot up. If i were you i would try to from what you say do an early am set up to try to get a shot off the roost. then spend the day hunting them with your pooch. if you can get away with it wear camo and not orange- think like you are turkey hunting and get set up in the dark. Good luck man

2Blackdogs

Thanks for the info/tips.  Every little bit helps.  I feel like I did back in college when I first took up the sport of hunting, not having a clue and researching everywhere I can to learn as much as I can.

This will be MN 4th season since the 40's and it is a very limited season.  182 tags are drawn, 5 days, and 2 chickens.  I lucked out and the season landed on my 4 day weekend at work, so only one day of vacation to burn up.

I'd love to get one mounted but my wife is starting to get pretty animated about any more mounts in the house, she claims that we don't live in a museum.  Little does she know that I have a Woodie in the freezer.

Jay..congrats on the hunt...I didnt know Minnesota even had Prairie chickens...I would have no idea how to hunt them...but if you get one...and mount it...and your bride wont let you keep it...you could always keep it at my house.....

Come to think of it...I watch alot of hunting programs on tv...and I dont think I've ever seen a Prairie Chicken hunt........
