04/24/2006 11:58 AM Alert

Well,  I got my Turkey this morning.

Today was opening day in MO. I put two birds to sleep last night on the edge of my brother in laws property.  (I love them Owl Calls!) I woke up at 0430 this morning to the sound of rain.  It was very tempting to just roll over and go back to sleep but I am glad I didn't.   I headed out to he farm and used the rain and darkness to let me sneak in very close to the birds and get set up.    The rain luckily slowed to a sprinkle as the sun was coming up and the sound of the first gobble let me know I was set up no more than 50 yds from the two toms.

I set up in the woods on the edge of a dirt field that had just been dozed to create a food plot/strutting zone.  We had not had time to plant it yet and it was just mud at this point.  I was not sure if the birds would avoid it or not.  I heard what I thought was a fly down cackle but was not sure. I broke out my brand new waterproof box call and gave a few soft yelps that to be honest did not sound that great.  The first couple of calls I got no response and then I must have hit the right note because the woods erupted with noise.  I hit a couple of licks on my power crystal which sounded terrible due to the fact it had gotten wet and got no response.  I hit the box one more time and got a vocal response.  At that point I decied to just sit on my hands and see what would happen.

As I am scanning the wood line from where the noise was coming I see a red head coming my direction.  I froze except for my heart which was pounding ninty miles an hour.  That bird was about 35 to 40 yds away and my gun was pointing the wrong direction.  As I was contemplating when to swing my gun another Tom appeared from my right and behind a tree but much closer, probably 20 yds.  I dont know how I was able to move my gun over with out either one catching me in the act but I took the closer bird and my day was done!

He was not big but it was a perfect hunt.  18lbs, 10inch beard.  If you have never been Spring Turkey Hunting you have to try it.  There is nothing more exciting than have a big Tom Gobbling like Crazy and being able to call them in.

Shot the bird at 0605 and I was out of the field by 0630 in the morning.  Cant beat that.  Sunrise was at 0620 and shooting time started at 0550.

The only bad part about killing your bird early is now I have to do some work around the house since I am already on vacation!

Hen stared at me for 10 mins, tom strutting 40 yards away to right.. Tom started to come and I pulled up, and **** thing stopped , 10 ga was getting heavy hen was stopped, Tom looked nevous and "BANG"!!!!  Ni NITE for tommy!

Well once the rain ended I packed to try a pm hunt. 1st I was going to tranplant some trees along a fence line down on the farm. While I was packing the van my neighbor asked if I wanted a bush for the farm -i said ok. Continued getting packed and then figured I'd better see if they needed help digging it out. Enterred their back yard and as they handed me the mutilated bush their little $H%#T of a dog jumped up and bit me right on the A#$! Darn that little S#!b got me too. So i took my new bush, threw it in the van and put alcohol and triple antipiotic ointment where the sun don't shine. Drove the hour and a half to the farm and then realized I forgot my pile of camo cloths - luckily had some back up camo sweats and of course a Ghillie suit   But 1st I had to plant a bush and 2 trees. Well the bush went smooth. Then I got the van stuck going over to plant the trees. So I planted one tree and then proceeded to try to get the van unstuck-We had 8 " of rain in 2 days down there and I was stuck on flat ground right along side the road. Then the neighbor with his 4wd dually came along and was happy to yank me out! Pulled me out by my hitch-backwards-it was the fastest i ever went in reverse!! At this point-enough of the trees-the last one can wait. Put on that sniper outfit and snuck up and into the birds. They were strutting and carrying on. I got made by some hens but I knew they would come back- sure enough after a brief thunderstorm with more noise from thunder then rain I heard the Toms a gobble every time the thunder clapped. Videotapped a Tom showing off to some hens till the memory card was about done-then saw that the other Tom looked even bigger so he got the word from Mr Browning. 12" + main beard paint brush, didn't really measure the 2nd beard yet. Spurs around 1 3/8 to 1 1/4.

Butt is still sore though

Great job Steve!   Now that is a Turkey Story.  Bit by a dog, stuck vehicle, but still get your bird.

Way to go!

No pictures developed yet but a great hunt opening day in Kansas. Went with a buddy to Perry Lake public land. Got in the woods about 5:30am and started to work our way to the place we were going to set up. We had not done any scouting so did not know if we would even see a turkey. About 5:45am a truck with a trailer was traveling down the highway and must have hit a bump the trailer made a big noise and right above us came a gobble. As we slowly and quietly moved back to where we came at least two more gobbles came. What luck, we walked right into a roost. We proceed to move back and up the bank to set up. We were no more the 50 yards away but the darn birds decided to fly down the ridge about 300 yards to a flat winter wheat field. We sat there and watched 3 different Tom's strutting around with several hens. We discussed our options sit here and try to call them back up the ridge or go after them. We started down the ridge, the ground was a little wet and the highway was close enough the traffic helped to hide our steps. As we got closer we discovered they not only flew down 300 yards or better but we had a creek that we would have to cross. We were within 75 yards and the winter wheat field was up the side of the creek bank about 6 feet high. This would be great cover to keep low and sneak up to the edge. But first we would have to belly crawl about 25 - 30 yards cross the creek and climb the 6 foot creek bank. I laid there for a while trying to decide how a 43 year old man got himself into this. Here comes the best part. The idea was to position ourselves on the creek bank, jump up and pound the birds. My buddy went first got himself positioned on the side of the creek bed and turned to me to move forward. I did my 30 yard belly crawl stayed very low crossed the creek and climbed onto the side of the creek bed. As we were getting ready a hen decided to jump down onto a small island in the creek to get a drink. If we moved it would spook her and the game would be over. She messed around there for about 5 minute then two wood ducks came floating down the creek, they swam within 10 feet of where I was, then a heron came in and set in just down the stream about 20 yards. The whole time we can still here the Tom's just over the bank. About that time a forth Tom shows up from the side we just came from. He was on top of the bank strutting trying to get the hen down in the creek to join him. I bet it took me moving very slowly about 3 minutes to move just enough to swing his direction. 22lbs, 91/2 inch beard spurs about 1 1/4. All done by 7:15am
I just love Turkey hunting.
