So far, we can't use dogs to hunt Turkeys out here (might change for Fall Season though).
Here are some pics of a flock (100 birds in the flock) real close to our waterfowl hole.

killerloop,
I like to hunt Turkeys once in awhile. Spring Turkey is certainly the most fun, but Fall Turkeys make the best eating. We still have two Turkeys in the freezer, so we probably won't hunt this Spring. Maybe this next Fall but undecided at this time.

At least go put out Jake and some Hen decoys and call one in and watch the Gobbler spur it. That is always great fun. I was able to fill 2 of my tags last weekend. Got 2 toms 8" and 8-1/2" beards and 1" spurs. They were responding to the call really good. It was awesome to see them coming in. Wild turkeys are always wonderful to eat too. I haven't ever noticed a difference between the spring and fall birds.

I like spring time the best also, it's a drawing here though you apply in dec and hope ya receive something in March. Lucky me, I get 5 days, but might not get to hunt them all, due to the dreaded word "WORK".....
But I've been to MO, and they sell right over the counter, kinda nice..

Bubulkaj,

I think the town I hunted near was St, Anthony or St Joe
But not doubt I saw over 100 turkeys a day. I shot a 25# and just video'd for buddy on the next 2, was a blast...  Fall turkey hunting, NOT around hear, much better things to hunt that time of year!!!! plus the don't talk in the fall... In MN anyway!..
Also Bubulk, if you do it right, can't you slide in the slot of the split weekend and even be eligable to shoot two??  I thought there was a thing like that???

My "other half" left today for a turkey hunt in New Mexico-had to give my spot up to a friend, since I am still in a walking cast

Robby & Shane after an opening day afternoon hunt in Kansas. Lots of birds around and the gobblers are still running together in loose groups.

The perfect hunt!  Iowa 2nd season was this weekend, and I took my 12 year old son and 10 year old daughter with me.  My son, John, and I both had tags.  I get him set up on the edge of a field, with a hen and jake decoy setup, and my daughter and I sat together about 10 yards farther back in the timber.  I told John, "watch for the turkey to come over the hill just to your left".  We are plenty early, since I misread the sunrise table and got to the woods almost an hour before sunrise.  No matter.  As soon as we get settled, we hear gobbling like crazy all through the woods, including one tom that could not have been more than 40 yards out.

I did some tree calls every few minutes, and each time I heard a gobble in reply.  I'd like to think it was my calling, but the gobblers were going like crazy so I think they would have gobbled whether I called or not.  The close turkey rattled off 9 gobbles in a row at one point - non stop.  I whispered to my daughter, "I really hope John gets a turkey", explaining to her that a dad would 10 times rather see his kid get a turkey than to get a turkey himself.  Those words were not sooner out of my mouth when the close tom gobbled again, so I told her ".....and I hope he gets that one."

When the tom finally flew down, I could not see it, but it sounded very close.  I could not see John and could not see the decoys from where I was sitting, so I could not see what was going on.  (For safety, I put some trees between John, who was shooting, and his sister and I, who were calling).  Within 5 minutes of fly-down, I heard John shoot.  I looked out, and saw the tom dead on the ground, right next to the decoys.  One shot, one bird.  This was his first bird, and it was a dandy!  10" beard and over 22#.  He was so excited, and so were his sister and I.  I'm glad he got his bird early; I went out later in the day and it was almost 80 degrees, way too hot for turkey hunting.

I'll tell you that watching your 12 year old get his first turkey is as exciting as watching your new puppy lock up on its first solid point.  It just does not get any better than this.

IAHunter,  thanks for sharing.  That is way cool.  There is something special about Turkey hunting that it does not matter who actually kills the TOM, just being out there and getting to see birds and have them get with in twenty yards or so makes if fun for everyone.  And when it is your son getting his first bird that makes it even more special.

Our season in MO does not start till the 24th.  I am taking the whole week off to go down to my Brother IN laws property in SE MO.  I will let you all know how it turns out.

Steve,  send me the video and I will attempt to post it.  We dont let just any one post a video for obvioius reasons.

Killer- 1st u must be a logged in. So now you are scrolled down to the end of this post and instead of using the "quick reply" section take note of the little "add reply" sign with a tiny pencil next to it on the left side just above the blue banner that separates the quick reply section. Click on that and you will get an expanded reply screen that allows up to 3 pics to be attached. Now if the add reply / pencil is not there then Joe needs to turn it on for you.
