Is any one out there planning on doing some coservaton order snow goose hunting this spring?  I plan on giving it a try agin this year.  Went one day last year and did not do much good.   Does any one know of any good outfitters in the MO, IA, NE or KS area.

I just got asked to go with a group to Mound City, MO on the weekend of March 11th. I've never done it before, and it sounds like a blast, blast, blast, blast, blast. That's right, no plug, electronic calling, and if there is a limit I think it is pretty high.

boy, that sounds like a good time. I might have to look into that in the years to come, I think this spring might be a bit busy but next year...definitely something to think about!

Doug,  I hunted near Mound City last year and will most likely hunt there again.  Lots of birds,  I just did not care for our guide last time.

And oh by the way....   There is No limit, I repeat.... No Limit!  Just Keep Loading and shooting.

How is the dog doing?

He's doing good, the stitches came out last night and got clearance to hit the field again. Only one week left for pheasants and we'll do our best to take some.

Brett,  I have my reservation with Shawn for 25 and 26 Feb,  I hope the birds are still here and dont move through by then.  This warm weather has me a little worried.  He seems like a great guy.  I am looking forward to it.  I am taking my 18 yr old son and my father-in-law.

I would highly recommend Kevin Hennecke. You can check out his web site at henneckehunts.com. It is a great set up in SE Nebraska and all the geese are shot over the decoys.

Joe,

Sorry for the late response but we just got back from vacation!

Looks like I will see you there then.  We are also hunting that same weekend as well as the weekend of 11 Feb.  Are you going to be hunting with Shawn or Mark?  I've hunted with both and I can assure you it will be a great time regardless!  They both work there tails off for you and will put you on the birds.  Listen to what he says and follow his instructions and you will learn a ton in case you ever get equipped to freelance it.  They both know their stuff when it comes to chasing the white horde.  Are you staying at the Apache or driving down for the day?  I'm bringing two different groups with me on each hunt but I will have my 16 yr old son and FIL with me on the 25th & 26th as well.

Bring plenty of shells and plan on having a great hunt!

Brett

Brett,

Shawn was awesome! We had a great hunt, perfect weather almost.  We could have used a little more wind early in the morning on Sunday but all in all the weather cooperated with us.  Sorry you could not make it down.  I was looking forward to meeting you.  Thank you for the suggestion of hunting with Shawn.  You might be regretting it because now you are going to have to compete with me for dates as well.  I for sure plan on going back next year.

We killed 40 Birds over the two days.  Not huge numbers but pretty good.  If we could shoot straight we could have easily had 50-60.

Yes,  And the big news of the weekend was my son Andrew came home with a double banded Snow Goose on his very first Snow Goose Hunt.  Shawn said it was his first double he has seen.  Here are some pictures of the hunt and the bands.

Thanks again.

Joe

Joe,

I talked to Shawn again yesterday and he said they were absolutely tearing them up.  I never did get a casualty report from him because everytime we got to talking he had to put the phone down due to incoming.  It's the first time I ever lived a hunt via the telephone!

He said yesterday was a major migation day and he thinks the main migration is finally on.  It's been a wierd year for snows - one that I personally could have done without.  We cancelled our trip on the 15th due to a lack of birds in the area and my hunt with Mark last weekend (near Salisbury) got cancelled well because the birds he was on moved out on Friday.  He was on 20,000+ birds Wed & Thur but they had completely left the area on Friday.  He drove around scouting for 4 hours and never really found any concentrations so he called and asked what we wanted to do.  We opted out hoping to get a later date.

We've already got two dates tied up for next year due to our cancellations so we'll hopefully got a shot at them then!

Hope to finally meet you at the MOKAN training day if everything works out on this end!
