I'm still trying to hunt as much as possible and thought Sat. would be good for ducks being the front end of a storm.  A buddy and went out to the popular local river and found a spot that had some good open water.  I started to put out decoys and break up the ice as I was going.  The water was about 6 inches deep and I felt good about our chances getting some ducks in.  Then my world came crashing in.  I took one step towards the shore and was met with water up to my chin!  NOw I don't have to say that it was cold, but it was.  Using new found skills I picked up watching Survior Man, I wallrused across the ice until I could stand up.  My clothes instantly froze and my buddy just sat there laughing.  I always have extra close and was able to change but we still got no ducks!  What a day!

I usally take my jacket off to set put the decoys out, so I had that right there on shore. "Happy Ending!" Did you here the part where I fell in and got no ducks? ;-)
Hey Kevin, how do the geese look up your way? Let hook up for some late season hunts!

Glad you are OK! It is very serious!!! I lost a good hunting buddy 3 years ago to ice. He fell through sheet ice and could not get out, he died a slow painful death way too young.... Luckily you had some to help out if needed and extra clothes. He was only 1/2 mile from his truck, but couldn't get out and back to his truck. He had his 4 year old son with him and threw him up out of the hole. His son was able to walk out to the road and flag down a truck, but Dad was dead when they got back....

Thank your blessings. We all say it won't happen to us, but you never know.
Keep it safe out there.
Pat

I understand and didn't mean to rain on your fun you had..... I have also had the pleasure of getting soaked while Duck hunting. Now I remember my friend every time I am out there and am much better prepaired. I just try to minimize the risk.
Happy hunting.
