Had a couple days free, so we went back to hunt in Oregon.  Couldn't have been happier with Churchill.   We're not that far along with handling yet, but he went "back" across the stream and got a bird he didn't see fall, so I was happy-it's sloppy, but coming along.

First morning hunt-a couple of inches of snow on the ground, starting to melt, cool temps.  We were in a draw, and the pup found birds steadily all morning-had 21 birds when we were done.  Carried the camera all day... forgot to use it.

Second morning hunt-warm, around 60 degrees with a bit of wind.  Steady birds early on, but as it got warmer and the wind picked up things got slower.  Hunted two hours-lots of it in thick, tall grain, and we put him up.  He had done so well both mornings that I wanted to stop on a good note.  I actually remembered to take a couple of photos, which show off my fabulous photographic talents...  but you'll get the idea.

First pic is on point (nice ear, huh?); second pic is waiting for "dad" to flush the bird; third pic is cooling off-lots of time in the water the second day.  You can still see where he was shaved for his surgery for the abscess a couple of months ago (all seems to be fine now).

Thanks, guys!

Stu, I imagine the poor dog wil be handicapped by his trainer from achieving that fancy title! There were pheasant, chukkar, hungarian partridge and valley quail. We were at a place that has wild birds, and they also do "early release" of pheasant and chukkar-they turn out lots of birds in April to supplement the wild population. Depending on where you are on the ranch, you might see one or two species, or you might see them all. We got all of them down in the draw the first morning, and I think mostly pheasants and huns the second day.

Wow, Hooli - you've sure figured out Oregon better than I have so far! either that or Churchill has either way, sounds like a great couple of days, I'm glad you got into lots of birds. I need to get out more!

Matt, we cheat-this was at a hunting lodge! But I'll tell you-I'd love to know where the closest public land to it is!

We went up in the Cascades to hunt for a Christmas tree on Sunday and harvested a great one for the house. On the way back down the Mtn at about 4,000' we saw a Mtn. Quail skirt off the road. My son and I got our shotguns out and turned the dogs loose and hunted the little buggars in some nasty thick stuff next to some old growth. The dogs would point and the quail would run ahead. I didn't get a shot, but my son got one quick one as one busted in front of him and and flew through an opening in the brush. He was about a foot behind the little speed demon. The dogs had fun and we had fun, just no birds in the bag. Next weekend may be Valley Quail and Grouse if I get my chores done.....
Glad to hear that Churchill had some fun!
Merry Christmas everyone.

Lord may I be half the man that my dogs think that I am!
