We had a great time in So Dak. The weather was perfect..mostly sunny everyday, lows around 19 to 22...highs from 40 to 48. We only had one windy day which kept the birds down in the coolies...or they would bust out way ahead of us..but we still got our limits by noon almost every day..

This was Dragons first time hunting wild pheasants and she did great.. She had atleast 12 points even with 2 other flushing labs working the field...and she even honored another dog that went on point... that was fun to see for the first time..she would hold point as long as the bird stood still..but if they started running...she was on them....something I'm going to have to work on...

I'm really impressed with her marking ability..we had one bird that took of and was shot..but didnt fall till it was two strips away...all 3 dogs went after it..but the other two stopped in the first strip...Dragon blew right by them and found the bird in the 2nd strip...one of the other guys hunting then asked me "so you thinking about having pups from that dog"

I wish I could have taken better pics of Dragon on point..but its hard when she's only 48 lbs..and the same color as everything in the field we're working..

she's actually somewhere in the last pic...well she's supposed to be...

I took Earl with also..not to hunt.but just to let him get some wild bird experience...he did really good also..He pointed 3 birds..(flushed a few more than that)...but all and all I has very happy.  After the 3rd point I shot the bird and he got to make his retrieve...you can see how proud he was of himself...

Stu- Great Trip-Give that Earl more work-he looks ready! We are having a hard time finding a Rooster that will sit still long enough for a point to be productive down here-but the experience is getting the little stinker (Chief) cranked up.

Steve,
Take Cheif up to South Dakota...never in my life have I seen so many birds...I only wished I lived there...what a better place to train a pup than in an area that was crawling with wild birds...Julie always said...the best way to train a pup was birds, birds, and more birds..and of course she is so right..

I almost left both dogs there so they could get a few more weeks of exsposure to wild birds...I'm going to have to settle with going back next year..

Stu- What general area were you in? I hit SD 2x a year but only the se corner-the population is not as good but we still have fun. Someday i want to go to a better area in SD. Chief went to SD early Nov and will be going back up next weekend.

I was hoping to get up to SD this year, but with 2 little girls at home its not going to happen. Thanks for sending the updates and making those of us not going feel so left out. Kidding. Great pics

2bd, thats funny that the se sd area isnt producing. I had a trip to IA planned before Rid hurt his leg and according to the IA DNR, the nw corner is the heaviest populated area for their pheasants. Maybe great pheasants in IA are consistent with OK hunting in SD. Dont know.

FWIW, I hunted SD twice over a 3 week period. Once just NW of Yankton (SE corner of the state) and then later north of Watertown (NE Corner). While the majority of the crops were still in when we hunted around Yankton (making the birds a little less concentrated) the hunting around Watertown was factors of magnitude better. Even in areas up North where there were fewer birds, it was still better. Can't speak for Iowa, but there seemed to be more roosters up north in SD than in the South this year.

Steve,
We were hunting between Pierre and Miller (central part of the state just east of the Missouri river) but saw lots of birds north of Watertown on the drive down. Redfield is supposed to have alot of birds also...thou we never checked it out ourselves this year..I have friends that hunted near Clark earlier and they did well also.

I had to show you this pic of a buck a local got a couple of years ago on the property we were hunting...I would really like to go after one of his son's or grandson's next year...

ITS BEEN ANOTHER MILD WINTER. BIRDS ARE EVERYWHERE WITH NO SHORTAGE OF FOOD. ITS GETTING TO THE POINT THAT THEY MIGHT NEED TO ALLOW PEOPLE TO TAKE 1 HEN IN THERE DAILY LIMIT OF 3. WITH OPENNING WEEKEND BEING DURING THE BEGINNING OF THE CORN HARVEST THERE WAS ONLY AN AVERAGE OF 1.5 BIRDS PER PERSON FOR THE FIRST TWO WEEKENDS.
