We had a fun and long weekend with Jeremy and the gang he organized. Never got a group pic-just a few out in the field. Conditions were very hot- 75'. Made it so tough. We had to work very hard for the birds.  Chief would try to establish a point but the bird would be long gone,1st pic. We did manage to push a few to edges and Chief got to retrieve. The 1st one after a long drive thru a cut wheat field was very lively when it hit the groind-he had to run it down and tackle it 3 times then brought it back still kicking (pic 2). This was a good learning experience. Sand burrs and other interesting items abound out there (pic3)-that devil claw stayed on that tire for miles till I pulled it off!

Then 50 yards later on that same drive along the road a second rooster busted out and the 16ga rang true. It was neat seeing it fly and go down accross the road and Chief got to get it. Later- Cletis was glad to ditch the doggie booties and relax on the bed

We all wished it was a lot cooler- they say that the cold is on the way for later this week.

Looks like Chief is doing a fine job! How's KC doing with her knee?

I think Chief is coming along good-hard for me to say as I have no previous puppy experience to compare to. I do think that 2 of his sisters do a better job at hunting for birds right now-he would just as well look for deer poo! Makes me nuts!! Gonna need to start talking to trainers for him.
If you saw kc you would have no idea that she had an operation -will be 6 weeks this friday. She goes in for a post op xray and eval next week. She is handling the confinement pretty well now that all the walls are covered with plywood so she can't dig thru the sheet rock! She gets out of solitare on Feb 1.I can tell from Cletis's "attention" that she is going to come into season over the next month or so. That would have meant confinement anyway.

That was by far the worst hunt I have ever been on. Between 8 of us we only got 13 birds I think. On day 1, after walking a half mile in 80 degree heat I realized Casey's water had fallen out of my vest. I had to leave the field and head back to the truck. He got way to hot and threw up. On day 2, him and I both got sprayed by a skunk. On day 3, Casey ripped a nail off his front paw and can only hobble around now. It is getting better though. On top of all this, I feel like Casey regressed in his training. I (I mean the trainer) had him rock solid steady. One guy in our group who was a "professional trainer" had 5 very untrained dogs with him. They broke on everything. Casey tried to follow suit. I stopped that real quick. I'll never hunt with his dogs again. Despite all this, I had a blast. I love that trip. I can't wait to do it again next year!!

Jeremy- I need Justins contact info so I can give him his bird someday.-Shoot me an email or call-I have left you messages. Heck yes it was still fun-Starting the hunt at surise in only a tee shirt- Guess I was the winner limiting out on sat ;) and very amusing hearing you, 300 yards away during the skunk encounter! Hehe-Sorry. That stuff Justin had really did help. That last drive was interesting-we broke off and pushed the tracks-wish someone would have woke up and blocked at the road-We were pushing birds-got multiple points aloing there and 3 hens up. I did not know Casey got hurt.
