There are three directors whose terms expire at the end of 2008. Those are Brice Romero, Stu Wange, and Joe Bubulka. It is unclear if any or all of them will run for re-election. * Membership information as well as certification information can be cross checked and updated in a prompt manner.
* Hunt Test Secretaries can easily enter test scores which will lead to quicker certificate generation.
* Improve the turn around time from Hunt Test Events to the results being posted online.
* New accounting reporting features: > Ability to enter one payment to cover multiple entries. > Refunds for scratch entries (if applicable). > Create income summary report.
* Allow BOD Secretary to add/update memberships on line (mail-in only).
* Add bird count report enabling HT secretaries to keep track of birds.
* Enhanced Reports > Alternate row shading for easier viewing. > Input translation to ALL CAPs when HTS enters data all lower case or proper case so reports and HT Booklet looks uniform.
* Enhanced scoring for quicker certificate generation. > Add owner name and address to score report.

Hey Folks... I just moved out to Oregon from PA! My job for the Dept. of Fish and Wildlife requires me to travel throughout the state, and I'm encouraged to bring the dog and "sample the resource" when the work day is done! So - if anyone has a hunting suggestions (upland or waterfowl), I'm all ears! Me and pup (18 mo. Stella, out of Bearpoint), are ready to put all that training to work in our first bird season!
Sorry if I've been taking more than giving on this site lately - I'm still trying to finish my thesis as I start the new job! But this spring I would love to get into some training.... Are there enough of us around here to start up a "club"? |

Matt, Welcome to Oregon. I moved here last summer from Ohio and live down in Roseburg, so give me a shout if you get down this way. I still have a whole lot to learn about hunting this state, but am enjoying every minute of my research! Pat

Hey - thanks guys... I really appreciate the offers. I will definitely hit you up sometime - hopefully before the season is over. Next week I'm travelling out to Burns to check out some of our Access sites there (I'm the new coordinator for ODFW's Access and Habitat program). But after that, I hope to pay a visit to our SW regional bio - and will try to end the trip on a weekend but really - your both so close... I could maybe even spend my own gas money! Thanks again, will be in touch. Matt |

Matt, I was thinking of heading to the Malheur NWR this weekend for the special bird hunt on the 22,000 acre parcel, but have heard that bird numbers are low in the SE area. What have you heard? It is a LONG drive from Roseburg and I don't want to make the long drive alone if numbers are not decent.... Otherwise I may hunt some ducks on the river down here, or chase Valley Quail on some BLM land somewhat close by. Have a good one. Pat

Pat, I was going to make it out for the opener on Malheur, but haven't had a chance to get out yet. I am going out Monday though, to hunt pheasant in the NWR, and chase around some chukar/huns in the steens mtn. area. I didn't ask my Malheur Biologist about bird numbers... because I need to go there anyway to meet landowners/etc. but next time, if you want to get a head's up on bird numbers anywhere in OR, feel free to call or email me at work: 503-947-6087, matthew.t.keenan@state.or.us I still can't get over the fact it is my job have these answers for you - preferably through 1st hand experience! How is the duck hunting? My boss gave me a couple dozen old deeks, but I think they need repainting before I take them out. Unfortunately, I don't think I have time/money to invest in waterfowl this year, although I haven't had the heart to tell my dog yet Good luck out there! -Matt |

Matt, I didn't make it over to Malheur either. I found out on the Friday I was going to go that I had won a new 2008 Ford Ranger SuperCab 4x4 PU!!!! It was the Grand Prize for our Company's United Way Campaign. The Company hand't purchased it so I was given a max MSRP allowed. I spent the weekend researching Rangers on lots and playing with Fords build it site.... In the long run I ended up asking if I could transfer the prize to an Escape for the mileage as the Ranger gets the same mileage that my Ford Excursion 4x4 gets..... They said yes, so I now have a run around town 2008 Ford Escape XLT 4x4 with the 3.0 V6. I was blown away when I went to pick it up, they said they "found" another rebate so they threw in 4 yr/52,000 mile free maintenance and 4 yrs of Oregon tabs!!!! It has been a CRAZY week!!!!
I may head up and do some grouse hunting tomorrow just to get the dogs and me out. I haven't duck hunted here either yet, but hear that there are some great opportunities, especially for Wigeon in the Valleys. No shortage of opportunities for us and the dogs! I need to check out some spots on the Umpqua for waterfowl.
Let me know if you get over to Malheur, or are headed that direction and will be over there on a weekend. We should meet up sometime. Have a good one. Pat patp@rfpco.com - work email. 541-817-4580 cell

Wow!!! Holy $#*%!!! That's unbelieavable! You must be... blown away!! wow.. I need one of those.. I'm driving to these sites in my pontiac sunfire with about 4" of clearance! thats just unbelievable. I'm so happy for you. Well, Im heading out on Monday after lunch to Malheur/Steens Mtn/etc... but was planning to return for "office" work on Friday. But I'll see how things go in the am.. and run it by my boss... and maybe I'll just stay through the weekend. It's just hard for me to suck it up and actually pay for my own hotel room But it would be great to hunt with someone else, especially another PL hunter! I will let you know if my plans change. Congratulations!!

Matt, Blown away is an understatement! It has been a fun week!!!! Now I have more economical transportation for around town that can still be used for some hunting applications. I remember the days of low clearance! I had a Ford Ranchero in college for a couple of years that would bottom out if I thought about getting off the pavement. After draging the bottom for a year getting out to fishing areas I sold it prior to hunting season and got a Toyota 2 wheel drive pu that got me the rest of the way through school. Let me know how the bird numbers are over there cause I still need to chase some pheasants this year and there season is winding down..... Went out locally after quail yesterday and found a new area. Didn't get to hunt it since there was a youth deer hunt taking place and I didn't want to mess up some kids hunt. But I will be back in a few weeks to check it out in more detail for quail. Have a good week and keep in touch. Pat

Matt,
If you have a small boat (or large one) duck hunting on the Willamette just outside Salem is pretty good.
Just got back from the Vale area.
The numbers were very low. Some quail and chuckar, no pheasant seen.
I have a new pup (6mo) which I'm still working on basics. This was the
first time I was able to get him around any birds. I only bumped 2
groups. No points yet, but not worried about it. My friends did better
with finding birds.

Thanks for the advice kbuc! Unfortunately, I don't have a boat (yet)... but will be working on that for next year! Yup... birds are a little down this year, but I'm thrilled to get into any birds at all That's great to be able to get the dogs out.. you've got lots ahead at just 6 months. I only have a taste with my first pup still only at 20 months. We've got a great ride ahead! If you live in the area, then let me know if you'd like to train or hunt together sometime. Good luck out there! |

| Sounds great kbuc!! I was just thinking (as I was picking back through Julie's book.... **** thats a great resource!) that I've been doing too much control lately without enough bird work. And it's tough to do bird work alone. I could certainly pitch in for a few training birds. In PA I raised 400 quail and 150 chuckar from chicks - now in Salem I don't even have room for a pigeon coop! Keep in touch: email mtk13@psu.edu or call 508-493-5350. |

Matt, You been getting out at all lately? I was in Missoula last week and didn't get out this weekend as I brought a cold back with me from MT. I may try to get out and try a new area for Valley Quail next weekend if the dogs and I can slip away. I will need to get some maps for good areas in Eastern Oregon and we will have to meet up and hunt together next fall for sure. Let me know if you get down this way, or if you guys are going to train up your way. I have a Gunners Up Launcher and two Dogtra bird launchers that could stand to be dusted off and used. Have a good one. Pat

Matt,
I sent you an email. I hop to get Julie's book in the mail today
or tomorrow. That way if we do some training together (or anyone
else) I'll be on the same page.
As far as holding birds, my coop is 14x14x7. Not all is
rainproofed. Don't know how many that can hold, but I don't think
I can afford a whole bunch anyway.
How many birds to people go thru a year for training?

People can go through as many as they can afford.....
First question is what are your goals for the year? Build a strong foundation, run him in testing, or? Have you found any places with wild Valley Quail, Pheasant or Grouse up your way to run him on? Do you have access to good land to train on? Lots of questions eh?
Read Julie's puppy section and the upland section and think about what you are trying to accomplish. If I were in your shoes I would only get good strong flying birds, or nothing at all.... You do not want to set your pup up learning that he can catch birds. I can talk for hours about that...... Ideally get your dog on birds at least once a week for awhile, maybe two to three birds per day, depending on how he is acting around them. He comes from good stock, so the point should be in there.
Let me know if you want to talk dogs sometime. Pat |

Goals or wishes?
My goal this year is to have him ready for upland hunting next
year. Standard commands, simple blind retreives, and pointing.
Would love to do alot of bird hunting next year. I won't be looking for
perfection, but want him ready for the season.
My wishes (eventually) is to enter him into some different type
of hunt tests that are available. This would be something that I would
do myself, as in not sending him to a trainer. This is more of a
personal goal or accomplishment. I have absolutely nothing bad to say
about trainers at all, and feel that they are worth their weight in
gold. This is just something that "I" want to accomplish. It didn't
happen with my last dog, maybe this time.
I have alot to prove next year with my pup. My hunting buddies have
goldens, labs and GSP's. We always harrass each other (all in good fun)
about the what's best hunting dog. I'll be in the spotlight next season
when I go to show them that I have the best of both worlds!

Pat,
No, I haven't been out lately at all. I probably wont' buy a new license, because if I wait until April I will officially be a "resident" and can save some $$. So, my season is done But training season is on! haha. yeah, we're definetely looking for birdwork up here. Do you have/know of good grounds between you and me? I'll do some research on bird suppliers, but let know if you have any leads in that department as well.

Matt, Boy do I know where you are coming from! That is why I didn't hunt at all my first hunting season here...... Just too expensive, plus getting the family settled and me getting settled at work were the highest priority. I may still get out and hunt some before the Western bird seasons close. I don't have a supplier, but Bruce Flaming might have one and some grounds. I will need to get new rubbers for my Gunners Up launcher and then it will be ready for some marking drill work. Pat
