Ok- And now for something completely different! I have a hog hunt trip to Texas all set up and one of the group has dropped out. So if any one wants to go and try to get a pig, 2/17-2/19 let me know asap so we can see if we can work it out. This is a wild boar hunt-not on a preserve or anything like that. We will hunt day and nite and stay in a primitive cabin-semi roughing it on 700 acres of bottom. Will be driving out of Metro KC at 2am on Friday the 17th to get to the place early afternoon on that day to meet the landowner and get shown around. Cost is not bad. $250 for the 2 days includes the bunkhouse (cabin). Out of state Lic is $45. We plan to do this with rifles/pistols. Time for the "other White Meat!" pm me if interested asap. The one in the pic is a "good eater" size!! It was actually taken in Ks, but they are pretty rare here so thus the trip to Texas. It is estimated that there are 3 to 4 million wild hogs in Tx at this point in time!!

So how does wild pig taste? Are they more likely to have parasite problems? How big is the one in the picture?
A few weeks ago I watched a Tred Barta show. He was hunting hogs with a pack of trained dogs. Once the pig was cornered, there were dogs whose specialty was grabbing and holding on to the hog.....so a daring hunter could "dispatch" them up close with a knife. The hogs weren't that big, but he sure did it the hard way. |

| They taste great. IMHO the best tasting of all the game I have taken so far. I have read that like 1% would have some of the various bugs,I wear those disposable gloves just as if cleaning a deer. Never did weigh the one in the pic-It should be between 100 and 150lbs. I have never done the hunt with dogs-but will probably try it some day, But not with a knife-would still want to use a firearm-the dog hunters can almost guarentee results though. This hunt will pretty much be done like a deer hunt-except we can also hunt at night and use lights and bait (corn). There are feeers set up and tree stands and pop up blinds also. |

2 BD -Sounds like a great time!! A group of us are going down to Chain Ranch Sportsman Club in Oklahoma. Hogs aren't considered a game species so no license is required. They charge $50 a day per man for lodging and pigs are $100 per pig harvested. Most of the pigs are 125 to 170 lbs but their are some really big ones that come out at night. We take our own chowand do the cooking and have a great time. The folks down at Chain Ranch do a really good job. If I get motivated I'll smoke some for the training day on 11 Mar. |

Down in La we used "Bay hounds" called Catahoula Leopards, they are a mixed breed of coonhounds-mongrels-pitbulls,We would turn them loose after the hogs, once "Bayed" (cornered) we would find them,we always had a "catch dog" with us on a lead that wore body armor, once we found them,we sicked the catch dog(pitbull) in.I have taken 10 with a 13" Arkansas Toothpick,It is the biggest rush one can get, knowing in the back of your mind that the pig can get you too. After the battle I always needed to lie on the ground for about an half hour to catch my breath..Makes for great memories and excellent eating..Good luck 2BDs............ |

Going after em with spot lights while feeding over bait- not sure I would call that hunting. Killing, yes- and I’m sure it would still be a blast, but not hunting in the sense I think of it.
Going after them with dogs and a knife. Killing, yes- hunting... at it’s extreme!! What a rush that would be. Time to call out your inner beast and bring to the table the true barbarian that is within us all! That would be a true rush that I would have to work myself up for |

I went Hog hunting In Mississippi a few years ago. We were down there to duck hunt but we hooked up the the "Hog Man" and he had about a dozen dogs. We went out twice. Never got a hog, but it definitely was interesting! |

| Jason- I shot the one in the pic , 215lbs, and a much smaller sow. The other guy did not get one. Things were tough with the weather changing from 84'F to 32'F with freezing rain off and on all weekend. Getting home was even bigger challange! Crashes everywhere in Dallas and OKC Sunday with bad roads made a long trip... |
