How did everyone do? I took a limit (15) at Kiowa Creek. It took just under 3 hours and a box and a half of shells. The nice thing was, I did not even a the best spot. There was much more shooting on both ends of me.

Looks like you need another dog or two Kevin!

We did well in the opener Jeff, then headed for the mtns and 4 days of grouse hunting. A day of R&R then back out east for dove on Friday and teal Saturday and Sunday.

I usually hunt them one at a time but I only had one hour before sunset and I looked at them and they all were saying TAKE ME, TAKE ME!!!! So I opened the door and out we all went! That by the way was right in front of my house, The doves changed there way of flying (I think because of the front) and they were flying right over my house!!!

Thats pretty cool to be able to just stand in the yard and shoot some! Now if I went and did that in my yard you would read about it alright- in the news! HA And I have plenty of these city slicker doves hanging around all year too! Glad all the dogs got to have fun.

T.B.,
How was the teal hunting? I totally forgot about it! I am still waiting for Zoie's first bird too. I got new work hours and have been adjusting to that. I have Sat - Monday off and work 6 to 4. Look out birds here I come!

It was good Jeff, limited out Saturday by 6:30 then shot some doves with #4 3" steel mags. Sunday was slower but scraped out a couple of teal and got home just in time for kickoff of the broncos game. Heading back up this afternoon, hoping the cold front earlier in the week brought some more birds down.

Grouse hunting was great, hunted 4 days, found birds on almost each outing and managed to drop a few for Pi. We've had a wonderful opener, hunting 8 out of the first 9 days.

Dove hunting was very good early! I had permission for one field (harvested wheat next to un-harvested corn) where we saw close to 500 plus birds at any given time. Shot several limits in that field.

Teal was outstanding. I hate hunting Jackson but the scouting this year showed it would be good. Thursday morning i had my limit by 6:29 am. 2 Blue Wings and a Green Wing. Had a flock of shovelers and some red-heads with death wishes.

I can't wait for Duck season. Youth season is the 29th and I can't wait.

Hey Scott this must be a typo. I'm sure you know the limit on teal is 4 not 3.

I'm with you, I can't wait for the big ducks to open. I'll miss the opener this year, I'll be in Toledo for a convention.....but will probably get up that way early Sunday the day after the opener for a day or two. Then heading up to the CO River the following Friday/Saturday for a cast and blast float trip. Pi's never been in a boat so this could be interesting.

Just call me fat fingers.  What I meant to say was that I shot 3 blue-wings and 1 green-wing.  I actually ate some for lunch today.

And why did it take you so long to shoot your limit?  If you will notice I had my limit a little earlier than you.......what was the problem?

Is that the load you use for teal?  3" magnums in #4's.  I have only hunted the early teal for a couple of years but I have never shot anything larger than Steel #6 in 2-3/4".  This year I had some steel #7's that I carry for quail on the river.  I did have two crippled teal but didn't seem to have a problem shooting the decoying birds.

Your cast and blast sounds like a ......blast.  I love the early season because of the mixed bag of ducks, if you throw in some trout it would be an incredible trip.  Are you mostly fly-fishing?

Come on big ducks!  October 6th can't come soon enough.  The reservoirs look so much better this year than they did last year at this time.  Doves are mostly gone, seeing some of the Eurasion stick around but that is typical.

Okay fat fingers, I figured as much but couldn't let it slide.

Hey what can I say, I bought a case of #4s mags when on sale after the season closed. Couldn't justifiy buying some small loads for a couple of outings. I should've tug in the reserves a little though. I know I have some 2 3/4 loads in smaller shot sizes. But what the heck isn't a teal a duck?

What took me so long was Pi. She decided to help a group that whized in over our head. Taking that hop, hop to help em in. Natually she hopped right in front of me, so I couldn't pull the trigger. Hopefully she learned something cuz there was no bang with that group. And rarely do they come back around for another try. Whooch and then they're gone, dang this is fun stuff! Teal and dove can humble a guy for sure, but I'm shooting well this year...knock on wood.

It will be a fly fishing cast and blast. Got to know a guide that works out of Taylor Creek shop in Basalt and a buddy of his. He'll get a few days off and use the shops drift boat. I told him I wouldn't be able to row, but would love to tag along as long as Pi could join us. Locked up the date this am. and I'm pumped. Never fished out of a drift boat or with a guide. He said they smacked the fish on streamers last year and managed to scrap out a few ducks as well.

So are your taking the kids out for the youth hunt?

I saw a few doves Saturday, there's whole bunch of Eurasion's living in Hill Rose. We would see them regularily on the river last year all through the season. Going to start shooting some this year, now that it's official with the DOW, shoot em, no limits.

Lot's of water for sure, the Platte is still running high, but no water in the Pruit ditch yet. Though it had water in it 4 weeks ago...go figure. I'll be glad when they stop the irrigation, we get more water then in the ditches, via the replenishment ponds and can fill up the DU pond.

So are we going to have the corn mountain again up in Ft Morgan or did the guy wise up?

Mr. Corn Mountain.  That was such a riot.  We may have talked about this last year but the geese were in heaven.  That mountain is probably responsible for some geese making it thru a tough winter.  Eventually he used an old truck and some scare-crows on top of the mountain to keep the geese away.

I am glad someone saw the Pruit ditch running.  I was scouting a 10 days before teal opener and saw the ditch running strong.  A week later it was dry.  When I mentioned it to the local DOW guys they thought I was seeing things.  There is definately more water in Pruit than ALL of last season.  DOW agent also mentioned that there is a law-suit going on between a landowner and the DOW regarding public access around the back-side (SE) of Pruit.  It sounds like it could get interesting if the case sets a precedence.

My kids aren't quite old enough to pack a gun (5 and 7 years old) but have shared the blind with me on more than one occasion.  I will definately be taking someone on the youth hunt.  The opportunity is too great to pass up.  There are too many young men and women that need to learn the traditions.  Plus there are typically incredible number of 'un-educated' birds.  Last year was a great experience.

Don't you have a Johnny Box on your property?  How did they fair thru last winter?

Jeff its private, NE of Brush and sits right between two public areas. We are off to a good start and enjoying every minute of it. I can’t take guests or I’d get you up there. Last year was better than most, due to the cold weather and heavy snows. The lakes were all frozen early, ducks went to the river, and then the river got slush in it so the ducks went to the sloughs. The guys that set up in wind swept fields cleaned up of both ducks and geese.

I was up there scouting 3 weeks prior to the dove opener when the Pruit was running full. A buddy was up there the following weekend working on some blinds and it was empty. So, if you saw if running 10 days prior to teal opener and just a few days prior to the first…they must run it for a few days and then shut it down. My understanding was it was dry for the dove opener, I hunted S of Brush so not positive. I've never hunted Pruit, but understand if you get down in the trees on the SE end it is phenomenal. There’s not place for the dogs though, unless you went in with a john boat, which may not be legal.

We don’t use JH any more, actually I think they quit using them 10 years or so ago. There are eighteen 55 gallon feeders throughout the property. They are kept full with either corn or milo. The quail seemed to far pretty well despite the deep snow. I was seeing them well into February around the feeders and when taking a walk with Pi. We got into two large covies when up there scouting on about an hour walk, so it looks promising. We released 500 in late March and a couple hundred two weeks ago. I’ve also seen quite a few phez chicks on the property that are about ¾ grown now.

I’m going to try and take a youth hunter this year. A good friend has a 12 yr old grandson that loves to hunt and is a great kid.

Trying to dig myself out of a heap of do-do now. I told my wife about the cast and blast last night and she reminded me that’s the weekend we’re going to Phoenix for her family reunion. She said go ahead and go on the float….along with a look that would kill! So, not only will I miss the opener, I’ll miss the second weekend as well. Should be able to reschedule the cast and blast, maybe do it during the middle of the week, he seems to be pretty flexible.
