I just looked at it and saw it was about an 9 hour drive. That is alot shorter than the 16 hours I was first told. Lets do it!

They do but not all public areas are WIP. I'm just looking for some info before I go. I'm thinking 2 week of Nov.

I've been to SD a few times. So far I have not had to pay to hunt, but it is getting harder and harder. So much so i switched to North Dakota. SD is a great place, just can't see spending $250 to $500 a day a gun.
My advice is to go to the NE area of SD later in the season if you want to hunt a full week. Did well up there, plenty of walk-in areas.

Or, if you only want to hunt a day or two there is a great place called LaCreek. 18,000 acres of cattails and wide open fields. Beautiful place. Only thing is, after the first two days the pheasants run into the protected areas due to all the pressure on them. But two days of limits is definitely doable, can even go further if there are a lot of birdies.

And the best part is it only takes about 6 hours to drive there from Co. If you're interested Kevin, I'll tell you exactly where and how I had luck hunting it. where I stayed (camping and hoteling).
Do need to use non-toxic (I used hevi-shot), but hey, it's only 3 shells!

Vic, Let me know when and where. I would love to go. I can co-pilot and help pay for gas. No dogs (too old) so it would be me and my guns. Let me know

I would like to get a good size group to go. What could be better, a bunch of guys and dogs to trade in and out? Sounds like it could be a hard time for the pheasants.

Yes Vic I would be interested! If we had a group go out there to that 18000 acres it would have to be the first and second day for sure! Kevin

here is some info: " I know guys that go from Colorado to Pierre every year and do well. Plus, you can go to the National Grasslands their and hunt Prairie Chicken. You should be able to get your hands on good quality maps for public area and find plenty to hunt." And "If you decide to go out to the national grasslands, take a rifle too, lots of prairie dogs to be shot at too. That can be awful exciting if you get on a good dog town. "

This is from another hunting forum.

A word to the wise guys. The motels book up fast, better figure out where you're going and make some reservations....or plan on sleeping in the back of the truck.

Hey guys, I was contacted by a guy who has a place in Mitchell. He wasn't asking for much, in fact cheaper than most hotels. He has most of the later season open and said he will guide. Let me know if you want the info.
