Is it a bad idea to train my dog to lay down until released?? I do a lot of duck hunting (FIELD) in ND, seems like if I were to train him to be steady while laying it would fit the bill better for my hunting style. Question though, am I confusing him??? He is really high strung, when told to sit he does well, a little creeping but working on it, but sometimes when I give the cmmand to sit, and have to say again do to eagerness, he comes and gets close to right leg, then lays w/o the command,,, no collar is used.......... Should I keep on the SIT until no creeping? then proceed? Help!!! |

If you initially teach the dog that "down" is a release position, then "sit" will mean he is closer to getting released, creeping or breaking.
"Down" is a good idea if you want the dog to feel as if it is submitting to your authority. I have used it when honoring because 1) the dog is in a more submissive position, 2) it is a good cue that he's not going anywhere and 3) the dog is one step further away from moving. These ideas are focusing on hunt test preparations.
However, when field hunting my dogs are in a hide where they are expected to remain down. They will be released from the hide. I think they know the difference.

| I grew up in MinneSNOWta and I do miss it. But Colorado is pretty nice too. Wher do you live?
I grew up in Detroit Lakes.
I am not a professional trainer, I let Julie handle that. But, FF and obedience will corect that problem, the pup needs to know who is boss. The collar is the easy way out from what I am told.
