OK, All you handlers out there, I HAVE A PROBLEM!! Took the dogs to the hunt test today,The manners to the holding blind were good (1 sit 1 heal command no more) went to the line with the dogs and 2 of the dogs went down to the bird found it then proceeded to mess around(the only good way of putting it) then picked up the bird and brought it back!! One did it on 1 bird the other (WHO HAS NEVER DONE THIS) did it with both birds! They do not do this in training!! So are they test wise? Am I slacking in some area? I do not want this to become a habit!! Any help is appreciated!! Thanks Kevin |

| Could it be that they are smelling the spots where other birds had been from the dogs that ran before you? If that is the case then that situation would need to be duplicated in training. |

Messing around = with the bird or in the area? "Familiar" birds? As in a specie the dogs have been worked on before? Not something new and different like gooey, wet, mangled, etc?

| These are ducks Jere we work with them all the time!! 1 live flyer then shot . Then the second bird is 1 dead bird launched or thrown for the mark!! Messing around means going to the fall of the bird then! running around peeing on weeds, running around then going back to the bird and bringing it back. Jedi actually picked the flyer up then droped it went over peed ran around then picked the bird up and brought it back. Kevin |

"They do not do this in training" is a phrase that most are quite familiar with. I've used it, too. Until recently, I bought into this. What can I do? For me I really wasn't dealing with the proper issues while training. The messages in training were permitting the dog to be Ok with escalating the little things that excitement magnifies.
For example, the dog lowers his head occassionally to sniff the ground when on heel.......Ok no big deal. The dog reaches over and touches you with his nose occasionally on heel (which is a signal of retaining dominance)......Ok no big deal. The dog's head wanders around taking in the sights when heeling......Ok no big deal. His head is maybe only a couple of feet farther ahead of my knee once in awhile.....Ok no big deal. My dog is not really focused on me, but he is almost where I want him.....Ok no big deal. We are in the holding blind and he is quietly sniffing the ground (again).....Ok no big deal. These all are characteristics of a dog whose job is not well defined. He is not as responsive as he should be. His focus is out of balance. So when he goes out for a retrieve in a new environment......it's Ok to do whatever he wants to do because......in his mind......it is no big deal.
In other words, the dog is sloppy while performing and not really challenged for perfection. Most pros are in agreement that amateurs are way too lenient in OB standards. It has taken me quite awhile to determine how to correct that. I have found out dogs will be looking every moment for a chance to take an "inch here and an inch there".....so that when the chips are down, suddenly they are miles off course. Never giving an inch is actually very fair because the messages become perfectly clear to the dog .........this is how it is done and variations are unacceptable. The problem is that we have a tendency to not really watch the dog closely enough to see them taking those "inches". |

One week will definitely be a test.
I've never had much luck changing a dog a lot in one week. However, it will give you a chance to maybe see just what is going on.
Edit: Here's a link with some good thoughts. Why are our dogs not sharp? (Link)” |

| Lots of good advice here. I like to try a think in terms of "What's the dog thinking..." that seems to help me figure out most problems. I had a similar problem recently. Zoie felt like "fetch" was an option. A quick visit back to force fetch fixed everything. Good luck with your fixer up week. |

Ok, I tightened up everything I had my wife video the test and jake aced it went directly to the bird picked it up and brought it back not even any circling or hunting for it one mark was 80 and the other 60 same with the water marks even heeled to the line without pulling!!! jedi will run HRC in 2 weeks and I will let you know how that goes!! Doc the minute he goes down for the bird to pick it up! I also picked up a tip from dale merritt! I think ther called in line marks were you move out 40 yards in a line and throw a mark then out 40 more and a mark on the other side then out40 more and on the other side etc. It seemed to help his marking too! |
