Daisy has completed FF and CC with a great attitude, and we have had a couple of days with no snow and frost free training areas. This morning was a round of remote winger stickmen singles. The focus was looking long past short gunners. Daisy is a high energy pup and a lot of fun.
One picture is Daisy returning with a "Kwick Bumper", and the other is a close-up of the stickmen/remote Mini-My-Winger set-up. |

Stu, Picture #10 is cropped quite a bit. Those water marks and blinds are 150 -190+ yards out there. The camera I was using in the early part of the Website building was a $50 D-Link special and my film editing skills were mediocre at best.
Still the tenacity of Taffey hadn't really set in with me until we ran this set-up. What she did that day was astounding and only a naive "newbie" would dream of asking a dog to try this. Then again since she handled it with style maybe we don't challenge the good ones enough. I'm sure roading a dog 6-7 miles on a regular basis makes a dog tough enough to handle a "few" long marks and blinds. I've seen way to many Labs all in after three long marks and a blind. Why is that? |

well Jim...it could be their owners are like me...getting old fat and lazy...????? roading 6 miles???? after pounding nails all day....I'm lucky if I can make it across my back yard 4 or 5 times with the dog...(its a really big back yard thou)
I'm thinking about writing a puppy training book....give Julie a run for her money...
I'm going to call it..."Training a dog...with a cocktail in your hand"....
puts the trainer more at ease...relieves the stress and pressure...more of a low keyed way to train....whatcha think????

That's a sobering thought!
The lazy comment is actually a good trait for a trainer to possess. It makes you more efficient when trying to get something done. The problem is you have to work hard to be lazy and successful. That does sound a bit like an oxymoron, but bear with me. The trick is to learn how to do the right things all the time.
By doing this early on, you "create" a successful, confident, learning mode dog. Your dog becomes easy to train and loves the brief, efficient interludes you have designed when functioning in the optimum lazy zone. Your dog progresses more quickly, has fewer issues that need to be dealt with and before you know it a "lazy" trainer has a finished dog. The mantra of the successful, lazy trainer becomes "Let's make this easier." Dogs never argue with "easier", and you never let then learn about being lazy.....otherwise they start training you.
Now as for the "cocktail" trainer......read my opening line. Drinking prevents you from becoming lazy.........in a bad way. |

Well if Lazy is good...then watch out pl world..the next GMPR is coming your way...
I was thinking of starting the book with chapter one.."the walk"
Pour yourself a cocktail..(beer or wine will work)...place it on the back deck of your house
walk the pup to the far end of your back yard...toss 3 happy bumpers for the pup....
If you've planned it out correctly...you should now be back at your deck...
tell the pup what a great job it did....and enjoy your cocktail....
1st day of training is done...(this should be repeated everyday...for atleast a couple of weeks before moving on to more advanced training |

Stu, I wouldn't read anything into the silence. Weekends are generally slow and this one was sad.
You and I need to go shoot a bunch of sea ducks and then post some really neat pictures. Wait a minute someone already did that. Actually throwing a couple of marks for a pup isn't that big a deal.
Two in Iraq, wow....that's got to tough. |
