05/03/2007 8:42 AM Alert

I have a year old dog that is doing everything well except for being hard mouthed.  She has been force fetched.  She brings the birds back but doesn't want to open up and let go.  Any suggestions on how to cure this problem?? thanks

She's 'sticky.'
Some thoughts:
When you say 'drop' or leave-it or whatever (dog standing), be ready to grab the flap of skin just in front of her hind leg and "gently" pull up and release the pull. Got to experiment a little to see just how hard to pull and how long to hold. Many dogs will instantly let go (and turn towards the hand that pulls). INSTANTLY, as she releases, say "good," release the pull (if not already) and accept the bird in your other hand.

Blowing air in one ear may also work to get dog to open mouth and release the bird. Beware: if you're not quick with the follow-up she might bite your face ...

Still, following the ff procedure she's been through already may well be the best appraoch.

Watch getting bit with the "flank skin" thing, too...

The method that I like best is to lift the flap of skin just in front of the dog's rear leg. A dog will drop the object right out.
