Matt- Can't answer that question- but I will tell you it is / was no big deal having and ecollar and a launcher controller both hanging on my neck. The launcher controller is vary small and light from DT systems. I have the BL-509 and 505 and have borrowed them out and used my self. They have seen a fair amount of use-no issues. Also know a pro that used several different brands and he will only use the DT now. He uses them often...When it comes to a remote bird launcher these DT's leave nothing to be desired.

Can't you just buy the Tritronics receiver to go with the transmitter and put it on any launcher or other device you want to control remotely? Homemade launchers or releasers are pretty easy to make. There are plans for launchers on the 'net. The new releasers are gaining acceptance for certain pointing dog training too.

Am I missing something?

Yes, I just figured out recently that the tritronics will, in fact, work on other launchers (including dogtra). I went with the dogtra's because of price/availability... to launchers with pro control electronics - I'm pretty excited for that package!!!
