I spoke to the division of wildlife today and found out the following (now don't quote me because I was writing as fast as I could and my notes are kind of fuzzy!).

A dog training permit allows for up to 25 birds in possesion. These birds must be accounted for by a reciept and they can only be hunted on the day of release (leftovers become property of the state). There is also a time limit that the birds can be held for (but I can't remember) and they can only be used "out of season" i.e. during pheasant season you can't train or use your birds.

A non-commercial game bird permit costs $20 for a lifetime (quite a deal!) and allows unlimited amounts of bird to be in your possesion (with receipt of course!). This permit does not allow for birds to be kept during the hunting season for the respective birds (so essentially it allows you to posses out of season game birds for the use of training.

A commercial game bird license costs $100 per year, but requires you to actually have a business that earns a profit for the use of these birds. It allows for unlimited amounts of birds to be used year round and you can set your own hunting season. Apparently there is a bit more record keeping required for this license.

That is what I found out. I'm sure I will be calling them back for further clarification, but that's it in a nutshell.

Trout, I am moving to Cedaredge, CO in June. Lots more room to train and I'm trying to figure out how to keep birds around for upland training year round.

That's a nice area you are moving to Rob! You better start grouse hunting, there should be some good areas not far from you....not to mention the fishing! Enjoy

There used to be a forum called the Quail Place - All About Game Birds. Doesn't appear to be up now, but you may try a search.

The problem is if you keep the birds very long in there they dont fly as well!!

How long are we talking?

Ive been looking into this as well. I kicked an email to the department of wildlife an parks and they gave me all the info. In KS you can keep quail and pheasants to work dogs, but can only shoot them in season. You can keep and shoot as many pigeons and chuckars as they want since they are not native game birds. I also found a site with netting that looks promising. www.endurancenetinc.com

Has anyone come across a decent reference for the care of gamebirds from chicks to adults if one was to go that route?

311hemi, If I leave the birds in there about a month they start to fly a little sluggish, If I go get the birds from Steve and within a week put them out then they fly really well, Steve has got huge pens for the chuckar and Quail to fly in!! Kevin

LIV2HUNT- I did the same research several years back-around y2k. The quail need to have tags on them that say "DT". If you want to shot them a comercial permit can be applied for that cost $20 yearly and an area for the training must be designated/visited by a game officer and approved. All this is not needed for the chuckars or pigeons. Let me know if you find a source for adult quail that are ready now- I could not find any-so I picked up some pigeons to give the pups early bird exposure. For short term housing I used a cage that is sold at TSC for rabbits- It went together in 15 min. They homed back to it pretty good but now appear to have flewn the coup' as they did not come back last time. So unless I can find quail I will be picking up a couple more pigeons. The pigeons are much hardier then the quail so may be a better choice anyway...  To date I have avoided all the hassles of bird raising and such by simpluy using a preserve...but wanting to let a new pup get some early bird exposure during the "walks" has brought me back around to this short term.

Thanks Hooli.

I actually got a pretty thorough response from W&P including all of the statutes regarding pen birds. Do you have a source for pidgeons in the KC area or are you trapping them. I thought about doing the same thing until I can get some flight ready birds. Im not ready to tackle the project of trying to keep young chicks alive.

Liv2- I went to a preserve just west of kc near eudora-only a half hour drive. The guy has a pretty good size pigeon coup set up and lots of them. he used to use them for dog training. He said they hold up a lot better then quail for that purpose. His main focus now is the preserve. I have not used his preserve yet but plan to since it is so much closer then the one I been going to in Ft Scott. Anyway I plan to run out there and pick a couple more up-probably this week. He gets $5 ea for them.

2BD Are you talking about Eckmans? He is a really nice guy. I didnt know he sold his pidgeons. I bought some quail from him last year to do the walk with the pup.
