How many of you house birds (pheasant, chukar, quail) for training purposes?

I would like to construct a small flight pen for chukar, but I am not sure of all of the regulations regarding using these types of birds for training.  I would probably try to keep 50-100 around at any given time.

For those of you in Colorado, who is the proper regulatory agency for asking these questions to?  (DOW?).

Does anybody know of a good resource for information on constructing a pen?  Also, what type of shelter would be needed (wind break, or an actual coupe)?

What about size?  I'm sure it should be based on the number of birds, but is there a guidline?

Any insight would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Rob

This link shows a chukar pen for a commercial farm.  It's way to big, but it may give you some ideas.

The folks in this pdf can probably help you.

Dealing with these regulations are one reason I love living in Alaska. Don't have any for quail, pheasant or chukar. Good luck and enjoy the birds.

Yes, Greg. We're lucky.. When the regs were drawn up there were folks in ADF&G that did field trials. They helped make it easier on themselves and us. The climate helps too.. We can not release non-indiginous game birds into the wild without making an attempt to kill or capture them. (I don't remember the precise wording but it can be found in the Alaska Administrative Code) Luckily escapees seldom survive for long. I know of no populations that have been established. In case that happens - the hunting season is open with no harvest limit 365 days a year. Jere

Rob,
Here is a web page for nets http://www.endurancenetinc.com/dreamsite/endurancenet/default.asp
I housed 10 pheasants and 10 chuckers over winter. I used the flyway pen with straw bales for shelter. I live in central Illinois.

Rob, I keep about 50 Quail on hand 20 chukar and my pet pheasant in 4 pens I went to home Depot and picked up some 10 x 10 pens , The problem is if you keep the birds very long in there they dont fly as well!! All you need is a recieipt of the birds on hand showing that they were bought by you. The place were I get my birds has 50 x 100 Pens and he has very good flight birds!!

Thanks for the help.

Kevin, I thought if you kept more than like 25 birds or so, then you had to get a permit from the DOW. I know about the reciept thing, but I think for more than a few birds at a time, you need to get an actual license or permit.

I put a call into the DOW on Friday, but they haven't gotten back to me yet. I want to make sure I'm doing it right so I can house birds and train year round. I'd like to construct a fairly tall flight pen so that I can keep the birds flying good.

Thanks for the input and links. I will check them out.

Hooligan, I'm going to try and watch the DVD that you sent me (via Kwick) this weekend. I will send it back to you next week. My hopes to raise quail may be thwarted by the natural predation in the area (bobcat, cougar, coyotes). I think I may be better off with chukar and a good flight pen.

Be careful what you admit to in a public place like this. I know a fellow who commented on a forum he killed three geese with two shots. A gamewarden found out and showed up at his door. The daily limit is two there. It ended up being unpleasant.

Actually the permit is for raising and sale of game birds not for personal use!! At least that is what I was told!!! Or there would be alot of farmers that would have to have a permit for all the turkeys they have

Rob, no rush on getting it back to me-whenever you've gotten out of it what you need is just fine. It usually takes me a few viewings...

If you have predators of that size, whatever you have had better have a strong pen! The biggest thing I have to deal with is a raccoon.

Yeah. I've got a really great training area right out my back door! I'll finally be able to do upland training as much as I want. I just have to figure out the best way to house the birds.

I was out walking the property earlier this week and I ran into a nice rooster pheasant and a little while later I flushed a nice covey (about 8) of quail! All on the property where we are going to live.

I know the wild bird hunting is not that great, but I'm looking forward to setting up a nice training area at least.

Rob, always remember that not all predators walk on the ground. There are eagles, hawks, owls etc. that will do in more birds then critters. The critters also like to entice the birds to the side and pop the heads off. Birds can get them to spook causing them to fly and then get them from the top. The critters (both walking and flying) are very good at their job. You may want to check out http://www.thatquailplace.com/ there are a lot of folks there who raise a lot of birds and have great answers. You can do a search of the forum and find a hugh amount of info from the pros.

Jere, they call it reasonable effort to recover. Thats where the dog comes in!!!

ASC, I noticed when I go fishing in Alaska I never see any cats? Or small dogs?  Does that have alot to do with the Eagles?

The critters which are the worst up here are weasels and mink. The kill response turns on and they can't stop until every available bird in the pen is dead. Then they eat the head of one, possibly drain some blood and leave, They do come back often, A #1 trap easily catches them - but the birds are gone. Jere

Rob where are you moving and when?

Not sure of the current laws....years ago you needed a dog training permit to train on state land in CO, i.e. Tamarac State Wildlife Area. The permit is free and good for ever. The law requires you to band any released birds on state land. On private land you are not required to band the birds. I don't recall any regulations on raising game birds and curiouos to see what you find out. You can buy the bands at the main DOW office on Broadway.

Actually it is gsc, the underline cuts off the tail!? Alaska isn't a friendly place for the feral cats. Dogs can survive but they usually aren't the problem either. Several years ago a gentleman made the news walking his wife's pet small dog, he turned his back and when he looked again, an eagle was off with lunch! We now call walking small dogs and cats trolling for eagles! There are places in the state where they will carry off pets from the back yard if left unattended.
