03/22/2007 12:17 PM Alert

I have a 10 month old pup that we put on some pen raised quail out a few months ago to see if he would point them. Two times out, he did point several so I was pleased with that. I wanted to get him exposed to some wild birds so we took him out with our older pointers. He picked up a couple of dead birds for me while he was out with us. The third time I took him out on pen raised birds he caught one that wouldn't fly. Then he wanted to jump in and catch all of them. Now, he will not point. I took him to a trainer in hopes that he could get him going again but after three weeks, he has not been able to do so either. The trainer is only spending 15 min with him a day which in my opinion is not enough, especially for the money I am paying him. I am going to go pick him up and give it a try myself.

Do any of you have any tips or tricks that I should do to get him pointing again? I am looking for any advice I can get. Thanks in advance for your time and help.

Couple of options:

1) More birds, and more birds. Ones that he cannot catch. I prefer Chukar.
2) Give it a month rest, then do number 1.

The "point" is that if a naturally pointing lab understands he cannot catch thos birds, he will follow his natural instinct to point.

Just my opinion.

15 minutes a day, three days a week is plenty - if the 15 minutes are "productive." I prefer carded wild caught pigeons for their wildness, ease of planting (if the training ground is appropriate) and low cost among other lesser considerations.

I'd prefer seeing the pup flash pointing wild birds before working at this though.
