The March 10th training day was great.  Lots of knowledge to learn from and some really good dogs to watch.  Thanks to everyone for the great day!

What I thought was great about the day was that Trout Bum was there, and P. Mathern and Vic Rompa and a bunch of folks from this forum and everbody learned some of the finer art of putting birds out and hunting birds and allowing dogs to do their thing - from people who know a little bit. It seemed like there was plenty of opportunity to learn and some really good people there just helping out because they could. Very, very cool....

Julie, About getting into the heads of the dog? I am finding out that some are a little bit thicker and harder to get into than others!!! We also had a great time out there, alot of good knowledge, and good people Kevin and Barbara.

I want to just say that Saturday was one of the best experiences that I have ever had! I know that sounds corny, but to be in the company of so many people that all have the same passion was truly special. Spending time with some of the friends that I already had and to meet so many more was really cool.

At first I was apprehensive of all of the pre-planning that a day like that took, but in the end I would say it was definitely worth it! Thanks to Tom, Vic, Paul, Trout, Jerry, Julie and everybody else for all of their selflessness.

I hope this group can really keep things going!

Rob

Good to hear such a positive response. I know that I can't wait for the chance to get together with you all real soon. Maybe a hunt culb or some more training. Good luck to those that have tests coming up.

A special thanks to everyone from Mark and I, and of course Jinnie.  We appreciated all of the great information and had an incredible time!  I knew it would be a learning experience, but WOW - so many knowledgeable people made it even more than I could have hoped for!  We look forward to seeing you all again soon!

Tom - thanks again for encouraging me to bring her out!

I sure had a lot a fun. Enjoyed meeting people from the forum, talking dogs and especially enjoyed the dogs.

A special thanks to everyone from Mark and I, and of course Jinnie.

I’m terrible with names, much better at remembering dog’s names then their owners. If I’m not mistaken, Jinnie was that four month old pup that stole the show! First time on birds, we toss a chukar under a bush (just like Hank in the book). Jinnie works across and in to the wind, with no handler pressure at all (not saying a word) just letting her do what comes naturally. She quarters across the wind, picks up the scent and locks up tighter than a drum! The best part was it was in full view of the gallery! The oos and aahs from everyone and the beaming smiles of her proud owners sure made the day for me! I sure hope someone got a picture of that pup on point!

I was a little apprehensive as well. Left Pi at home because I wasn’t sure how things were going to go. I didn’t want to put her in a situation I wasn’t comfortable with or her having to sit in a kennel all day. Wish I’d have brought her a long. She would have enjoyed the day as I did. I didn’t get a chance to make it over to where the marks were run, I’m sure it went smoothing.

How generous of Julie, not only hosting the training day on her training grounds, but also sharing her wealth of knowledge and devoting the entire day!

I would agree, Little Jinnie stole the show! What a great pup. Jinnie was a monster on her marks and finished the day with a great point. I am sure Jinnie will keep on impressing people in the future.

Thanks for the wonderful words for Jinnie - thankfully, she has good blood in her lines and we have been reading the first section of Julie's new book (read it again when I got home, and of course found some errors in what we've been doing!).

This is where Julie and others were saying that you can't teach 'em to point, we are just hear to help her learn how to use her talent.  With such a great group of hunters and proud pointing lab owners, we've definitely found our training group so we can help her become what she was born for!

Thanks again!  I got her out in some new fields for her daily "walk" this week, and we'll keep looking for new ones to help her learn more and more.

I look forward to seeing a lot of you in April at the hunt test - I'm anxious to see your dogs strut their stuff as well!  It was tough to see them in the cover this past weekend, although I was very impressed with the marks the dogs were running.  Such a fun day to see these labs do what they just love to do!

Just wanted to say my wife and I also had a great time.

Love seeing a dog work the field.

There were some great points. But you know what? If a dog didn't point it STILL was a great run.
This is just a way to get some fine dogs upland experience, which is really hard to come by when not actually hunting. And better yet, you can actually train your dog to be steady to wing and shot and not worry about that bird!

The main point I would like to make about this training day:
Everyone who came out really wanted to train some dogs AND wanted to help out.

I have been training a while. I hardly ever see a relatively large group of people (18 individual dog upland runs) willing to dedicate a whole Saturday to train their dog and most of their time helping others train.

I mean, it is unusual that a group of people who hardly know each other, all coordinated and dedicated one Saturday. We each spent 20 minutes on one run for the most part, and some time for marks. But everyone stayed a long time to help others (6+ hours at least, most spent like 8+ hours). Can't have a good club without that happening.

We have a very unique situation here. I hope we can keep this going.

Tom, thanks for organizing this.

Julie, thanks to you and Paul for getting all of this started and offering up your place of business for this initial upland day.

Great meeting who participated.
