Rocky is my 4mo old PL. Up until a week ago he had been doing great. Very attentive to me on our walks. Responded to his name, "no", "here" & "sit" without much isssue. He was even retrieving well. All owners I'm sure have experienced the euphoria associated with watching their pup do what they are supposed to. However about a week ago he started not paying attention. I throw a bumper he gets it and runs away. I call "here"and he runs away. I can't tell if he thinks it is fun or if he is just being stubborn. In either case I want it to stop...but do not know where to begin. Any suggestions?

byt5050.....I had the same issue with my 6 month old....and from the help on this forum and getting back to the Knutson book he is back on line.....Basically OB should start and you should have control at every step...I was training with bumpers and he would run around me with the bumper until I put a check cord on him and was able to pull him in over and over until now he comes right in....the main thing I learned is that you have to have control to make him do what you want...

He might be getting some new teeth in, I would take it easy with the retrieving until you are sure that he is done teething. For now you could start doing here with a checkcord. He is only 4 months old, lower your expectations for a little while, put the dog on some birds, and let him be a puppy. You will happy that you did later.

What training program are you following?
Why aren't you using a check cord (long lead)?

at 4 months the dog is too youg to be doing any formal training. dont worry about it, let the pup be a pup. You have plenty of time to work on this but now is not that time.

Good advice here-I'll second it. Get the first chapter of Julie's book online, relax and slow down. Bond now-train later.

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
