How many of you train in white?  How about using white for help in marking, like stick men?

Do you think that the white helps in training an HT dog, or does it hinder when you step up to the line in camo?

Yes, sometimes. Yes, a lot, but stickmen in relationship with helping to mark is a misconception.

Yes and No.

Gimmie more!

I train in white for the most part because I'm trying to minimize my own mistakes, that is having the posibility that the dog can't see me. If I'm in white (or black with a light background), then if she does not take a cast correctly, then I have less suspension that it's from me. Maybe that's just me. As far as stickmen. I don't have stickmen per say, but I do use white to mark gunner stations. My thinking is that it gives her a better chance at turning on multiples, actually concentrating on the mark rather than looking all over for it and finding it right before it hits the ground.

I really haven't thought about this that much, so that's why I'm asking for more input.

Jay....I dont yet...but I'm thinking about it....I just watched a dvd by Dave Roran..He talked in length about colors..shades..camo etc...

If you wear a white coat than you should wear a black hat and black gloves...If you wear camo...try wearing lighter shades of camo...interesting little tidbits of information kinda stuff

He stressed back ground...look behind you at what YOUR back ground is...try to imagine what a dog sees after its been cast...how hard it may be to see you....or pick up your movements

It showed what a dog sees...(kept flipping from color to black and white)..its amazing how well white shows up at 300 yds

I'm not done with the dvd yet..but he's taught me quite abit so far...

Oh...you know how Julie keeps saying "you need to learn to read your dog"?? he has a good section on that also...I think I now know what she means...

He also has a good segment on how to align your dog for the fall...filmed from above the dog looking down....

When I'm done with it...I'll send it to you if you'ld like to see it...

When setting up a marking exercise, there should be some idea of what you are trying to accomplish. What is the main focus? Is it counting, finding the gunners, introducing a factor and/or establishing a routine (to name a few).

In hunt tests, the spot from which a mark will be thrown is identified by duck calling, winger sounds, gunner fire (out there) and/or marking off a barrel at the line. The dog is taught to "look over here" because that's going to be the area of a mark. Having white coats at the marking stations is just another way of having a dog "look over here".

With field trial set-ups, this method of "look here" compensates for distance issues. In either venue, the dog needs to see the bird in the air and the area of the fall. This has to be fair. Afterall, tricking a dog by limiting its view makes no sense.

Only after good "looks" can you judge if counting (or whatever else you were focusing on) has improve or needs futher exposure. Nothing is more frustrating for a trainer than saying, "He didn't see the mark. Pick it up, and throw it again."

Well designed marking set-ups give dogs good "looks". Which clearly explains why excellent marking dogs always look good.

I can't!!!!!

If I ever put on anything white I am an immediate magnet to anything within 100 feet that will produce a nasty stain.
