In the past, every once in awhile I would write an evaluation of my dog's progress. This would result in some training changes designed to work on problem areas.

The weather has been very cold lately and time was abundant. So I am into organizing an "inventory" for each dog. To start with, each dog's strengths and weaknesses are listed. The plan is to take advantage of what they do well and work at reducing "holes". By writing it down, a training program can be developed to produce a better dog (in theory).

Since, I have always kept training journals, the focus will not be lost, and as the year progresses, we will see how this works out. Here is a rough draft of the first one for Daisy.

Very nicely done Jim!

I reached a very similar conclusion with Maverick recently (a lot less detailed than yours however!!!). Most (if not all) of Maverick's weakness' center around obedience. Even though I've spent a lot of time with him on OB, it seems that he is one dog that cannot be afforded any time off from OB.

It's not that he is being a "bad" dog, but rather a case of his high drive getting the better of him.  He has a lot of natural talent, but a lot of little things here and there (line manners, off-leash healing (sometimes on-leash healing!), too excitable during training, too vocal when excited, etc...) that all stem from a lack of good OB! Sometimes I tend to justify it with his age (23 months), but I am starting to realize that I need to require OB 24/7 as well. Thanks for sharing your insight.

Very interesting.

Rob
