one more thing i would like to add is: it is my firm belief this step comes before formal training begins the dog teaches itself with no pressure, pure fun.

Stu if you want to break her to shot give me a call or an email and I can help you with some things if you would like. This is a subject that I actually know more then most about, so I could finally be of some help.

A lot of you would be much better off getting a pointer book, or even going to a pointer trainer to work with him for awhile. Just remember that pointer trainers can be a little different so do some research and pick the right one to learn from. That is what I did, I break out dogs with no whoa command, no shock collar, no steps after the point, and they release on a fetch command. This is done by1-2 years of age, and is only done with birds and a check cord. Please take my advice and go to a pointer trainer to learn how to break dogs to wing and shot, that is what they do. For retriever work talk to someone that runs labs.

thanks so much for the email Julie -- you know I would do anything to go to Kentucky... it would be perfect timing - as far as where I am with pup, and because we have our first round of tests coming up. Unfortunately, dog training isn't a valid excuse for skipping out on conference presentations. But... I do have a free plane ticket... perhaps I can make it to a GC seminar in CO -- I'll have to poke around for info on such a potential event. Just went to the bird auction and picked up 35 pigeons - time to see what she's got!

Why blasphamy?
Oakcreek, I think Jere was giving it the "old tongue in cheek" treatment.

Although for some, training a dog is close to being a religious experience. Therefore, those individuals may think their way is the "only way'.

Julie,

I hope this is one of the topics that will be covered in dept at the KY seminar.
This is what is keeping Cinna from going for MPR in OH. (Well this and having me for a trainer/handler) Learning in KY will be to late fot the OH test, but maybe we get this under control for the Fall tests.
