A recent article in the Hunting Retriever (HRC) highlighted a concern with upland hunting and running marks/blinds. The thrust of it all was if a pup "goes crooked" early on "getting them straight" later is going to be "darn" difficult. This translated to Daisy's program. She quartered naturally when she was very young and she's always had a high search drive. However, crooked desires were balanced with early retriever training on marks and plenty of lining drills. In essence, she was taught WHEN to run straight or crooked. Last week we spent quite a bit of time chasing chukars.....that's "crooked". During that time there were some days spent on wagon wheel lining drills, pattern blinds, cold blinds and marks.........that's "straight". Since there is a possibility Daisy will run a few AKC derbies next spring......huge distances have become another focus. Yesterday, we setup the beginning of a 374 yard pattern blind. This was accomplished by moving backwards in small increments and casting to the pile for bumpers. She finished the day from about 175 yard out. Today, after sensing the fact she would probably not need the middle increments, we moved right to 374 yards and ran it. First go was three whistles. The second took two whistles, and the third time she lined it. It appears she's got the whole straight vs. crooked "thing" down.

That is very impressive. I don't think that you could send me 374 yards in a perfect straight line. Does that mean that I am crooked?

Probably, if you........have strong urges to wander, didn't buy into the whole force "thing", totally reject the idea of being handled and possess a cold nose that works overtime.

Jim,

As I've told you before --- You need to write a book or three and make some DVDs.
