Congrats on the new pup. From one newbie to another I recommend Knutsen's online book section 1. I am a brand new person to PL's and my little girl is 5 1/2 months old. I have been following Julies book and I am very happy with her progression. I have purchasded a couple of other books and a few videos to see how others do it, and I have chosen to follow Knutsen's program. I am sure you will get other great recommendations, but I am very happy with Knutsen's. Good Luck!!!

Flyhity,
It's Knutson -- not sen.............sen means Paul is a Dane (he's actually Norsky) and if there's anything that makes a Scandanavian angry, it's being that someone thinks he's a different kind of Scandanavian than what he really is.
If you've ever seen Paul, you know you should NOT make him angry. (hee hee hee).

BTW, my name is Erickson (definitely NOT Ericksen).

Congratulations on your pup!  I assume from your handle that it is probably a brown one.  If so, good for you!

I own my first PL.  He is three years old and I was a total newbie at training (still feel like I am ).  I found the early stage development portions of the Knutsons' book to be a great deal of help in understanding how to introduce my little buddy to the wide world.  I also had the Wolter's book "Water Dog" highly recommeded to me and I think it has some great info for early development.  I think there may be an updated "Water Dog" but I went "old school" with the original 60's(?) version.

I think the true measure of these two books is that I could see the value of these early exersizes as he grew, went into the field, and then advanced training.

There are probably other books out there with great info but these two have some important sections on that 8 weeks to 6 months time frame that is very important in socialization, bonding, basic obediance and helping your dog learn how to learn.
