Well, it's time to learn something new. Taffey was introduced to place boards at a very young age, and later I learned that a popular way to "whoa" train a dog was on platforms. Therefore, we didn't use anything. Taffey was smart and forgiving so I got away with doing "whoa" on the ground.

Daisy is a lot more "squirmy" (if you know what I mean). So.......I thought using a "whoa barrel" would take care of two things at once.......her penchant for constant motion and my learning more about "whoa barrel" training.

The last few weeks I've searched newspapers and the Yellow Pages for a source. No luck. The next step was to ask a few fast food chains if they had any. After all, grease is probably a big item.   Nope......only five gallon pails, but a young man (almost everyone is young to me) from a McDonalds volunteered that his uncle got seven barrels for free from a cheese manufacturer up in Wisconsin. Well, at the price of gas.....one was not going to be free. Next idea call the local food processing plants in nearby Rockford. Bingo.......nice clean, blue plastic 55 gallon barrel.......for free.

The next thing to do was researching for info on "why, when and how" to use one. Searches in the dog training forums kept coming up with "barrels" for guns and long discussions of the value of "whoa". The Internet has reduced my skimming through books.

Google search immediately gave me this link........

This topic might help someone shorten their search for and provide a concise "why, when and how" on the use of a "whoa barrel".

On day one, Daisy did really well. I put a carpet on top and she quickly became confident to move her paws. Then on day two, I rotated the barrel so the "slippery" side was up. Now she realizes "quiet feet" are much better.

The picture is day two. I took the lead off her and stepped away to take the picture. She was fine with that. Good pup!

My female (Darling) is very hyper and what helped me was to tell her whoa one time only after putting her on the barrel and show her the hand command. Not to confuse her as to which time I meant whoa. But of course I'm still new at this.
