"Another beginner mistake/s, keep the whistle in your mouth and worry about the dog, not the judges. As soon as your dog starts to chase after a missed bird you had better start whistling. "

I would qualify that.  Yes, you want to stop the dawg, but you don't want to get into a pissing match with it.  By that I mean if your pup generally chases fliers, and you hit the whistle once or twice and he doesn't stop, every time you blow the whistle after that and he still doesn't stop is a refusal.  You will get very low cooperation scores if you keep tooting and yelling HERE and the dawg doesn't respond.  Conversly, you may (and I stress may) only get a ding one allowign the dawg to chase that flier down.  Now, if you let the dawg go into the next county and order a pizza and beer, then you are showing the judges obvious control/training issues.  But, I'd rather see a dawg chase a flier 200 yards and retrieve it then have the same dawg whistled and whisteld after while making the same retrieve.  Let's face it, you know a pen raised bird probably isn't going to fly more than 100-200 yards anyway.  The dawgs are expected to stop when asked, not to be steady to flush or shot.

Mike,
I will not be running this spring, since at this time the plan is still to breed her this spring. I may try to run for her MPR in the fall, depending on the test schedule.
We may run Gunner for his CPR this spring depending on the weather and the farm schedule. It looks like he his ready to go for it. Then there is the hope he will be ready for APR in the fall, if I could make 2 this spring he might get a chance the APR this spring.
I hope to see all of you at at least one of the test and I would love to see Zeke get his titles.

Like every one keeps saying relax at the line as much as you can I know it is much easier to say that than it is to do it, but there is no reason at the APLA test to get worked up everyone there will be pulling for you and everyone, even the judges, want to see your dog get there titles.

Very good point dog&doug...
the one CPR test I saw in Minnesota last spring was basically a monsoon....water was everywhere...I will bring water just incase...
so now I'm alittle confused at the "whistle" thingy...I've let Ellie chase a few birds....but when called she has always stopped and come back....do I need to worry about her not doing this during the test because of all the confussion and excitement???

I"m getting a few folks from the Minnesota PL Forum together a few weeks before the Iowa test and we are going to "simulate" a CPR test...hoping that will help our dogs..and us....

Another couple of quick questions...

How come all handlers dont have to wear camo....like some other venues??

How does the test commitee pick the order of dogs to run...ie...who is first??? who is last?? and how soon does a person know when they are running there dog???

Stu,   Upland hunting does not require camo, and I am sure you dont want to see some of these guys in their underwear if they had to change clothes for the water series.    I dont know the real answer other than to say we never have.

The running order is picked randomly.   The order can be found in the "Booklet" that will be handed out at the test site.  We also plan on trying to post that info on the web site prior to the test if everything works out like we have planned.

Hope that helps.

If you really just have to know before the test day and we dont get it posted here, you can most likely call the HT Chairman for that test and ask him ahead of time.   It is not a big secret I dont believe.

Yikees......you mean there is a chance that me the "rookie"....may have to go first?????

ok...now Im really getting nervous...

I hearby move that all the pros should run their dogs first...so us "rookies" can see how its done.....any seconds to that motion???

Dont worry,  we are here to help.  Seriously, The CPR judges that I know are great! ( I am one)  There are no dumb questions and we will explain everything ahead of time and do our best to help you settle down.   You can ask questions at any time and we will do our best to clarify for you.   We really do want your dog to pass!  We are not out to get you as some might think.  Either the dog can meet the requirements or not .  Usually it is that simple.   A handler usually cant screw it up too bad.

I am sure you will do fine.    Dont sweat it.

Maybe I will start a post on "The CPR Game Plan" and let folks fill you in on their techniques and strategies for " game day"  I do think it does help to have a plan.  At least a simple one, no need to over think it.

Joe
