Howdy all , I hope everybody had a wonderfull easter /passover .

I am wondering how much training is too much training ??? I am fortunate enough to be able to train everyday  with Pearl .  befor we went on vacation  she was progressing nicly , but was balking at some commands . We go away for 10 days and she had no training at all mostly fun with neighbors dogs .

When we got back I saw a HUGE difference. She heals sits and stays when throwing bumpers . sit is perfect !!! Come is instant everytime even with distraction.

so my question is, the time off helped it seamed for her to mature /grow . so should I still train every day or everyother day??? when Im done training she gos into her crate to " think " on what we just did . Im realy reading my dog  and noticing ALOT more excitement and willing to please .

BTW yesterday was her first swim and retrieve in the water and she did great !!!

 thanks ken

I think it depends on what you are training for and the level of training of the dog.

I've found that when a dog is showing signs that "training isn't fun", that putting them up for a few days helps a lot. At Casey's level of training, he does best at about 5 days a week (Sat, Sun, Mon, Wed, Thu). But then again, we only train 6 months a year.

thanks Doc . I must say when I train with her I do different things everyday touching on the things we did the day befor . I should also say that she is 4.5 months old and probly the smartest dog I have ever owned.

what you are training for and the level of training of the dog

I would like to do some trials/ hunt test but Im not in a rush to do them . If it takes me and pearl 4 years to do things like that then so be it . If she progresses faster, thats great also . But Im also into hunting . So basicaly Its all fun .Im in it for the fun and as long as she thinks its fun and I do also we'll do it .

Her ped is very nice so Im sure the quality is there in her . I was just wondering about over training her ..... but I probly answered my own question. She gets OB all day and night as we play and such . her bumper training is still basic but she is doing great .

If you are worried about over training a 4.5 month old, you probably have been. Now she is getting close to the age to FF. I train dogs every day switching between retriever work and bird work. Or marks and blinds.
