By now most of you know that my specialty is asking the most basic questions. This is all new to me. I read Knutson's book, and one part that sounds like fun to me is the informal introduction to live birds. Abbey is 4 1/2 months old, so I picked up 20 quail to give her an informal introduction to live birds. I know from the book that it is an introduction, nothing more. I am not looking for her to do anything right, just to have fun whenever she happens to come across one. My plan is to plant 4-5 every now and then in the area where we do our daily walks, just to see what happens. Trust me, I really have no specific expectations.
Anyway, I have a couple of questions. First, do I try to keep the quail pen way away from her kennel, so she has no chance of smelling them while she is in her kennel. Right now I have the birds in a pen around the side of the house from her kennel, about 40' away. In other words, do I have to worry about her becoming accustomed to, and therefore uninterested in, the smell of birds?
Next, how long does it take to get the smell of quail out of the car? I took my wife's car, since I was on a road trip for work, and the quail were in her car for 4 hours on the way home. Quite a smell. Oh, and it happens to be our 15th wedding anniversary. I told her that 25 years is "Silver", 50 years is "Gold", 15 years must be "Quail". I'm not sure, but I think she may be the most understanding woman in the world. The true test will be when she gets in her car to go to work in the morning.
Any suggestions?
