Sunday was a good training day for Lick, Taffey, Kooly and Daisy. I am a member at Blonhaven Hunt Club and organize the retrievers from Badger State HRC. Today was a 650 rooster release. My son went along to help run the three older dogs together. With the focus on steadiness at the line, each dog took their turns retrieving. Heavy snow was forcast and started about the time the shoot began. By the time it was over my dogs had picked up about 40-50 birds and there was at least three inches of snow on the ground.
After lunch we "saddled" Daisy the pup and headed out to pick off two roosters. There were plenty because at least 300 had evaded the shooters. It wasn't long before Daisy was on point and two roosters jumped up. Greg shot one and Daisy made a nice to hand delivery. Force fetch, pile drills and OB standards are paying off handsomely. Shortly after that a rooster jumped wild off to the side of Daisy so Greg dropped that one. This resulted in another nice retrieve. We were done (or so I thought).
On the way back to the van, Daisy went on point again. After what appeared to be a solid shot from Greg, this rooster hit the ground running . The snow cover allowed us to see him making a "road runner" speedy move to the fence line. Daisy trailed him for awhile, but her inexperience ended up with her coming back to us. We moved up the fence line and about 100 yards up located the cripple which had burrowed into some heavy cover. Daisy ended up with one more retrieve. For a young pup, Daisy is way ahead of the game in the uplands. "Spooky" birds can't be duplicated in training. The timing of the tower shoots this winter has made for a lot of very useful training for the older dogs and has provide some great upland exposure for Daisy (and it is all free). |
