| I recently introduced my new pointing lab to pigeons in which he noticed the birds and gave chase. While on the walk I had two ocurrances that proved successful for the location of grouse. The first ocurrence seven flushed in all directions at approx 25 yards. Quinn my dog didn't even seem to notice. The second occurrence happened approx 1 week later in which a grouping of four grouse flushed at 10 yards with seconds in between. Quinn noticed the sound and stood listening but did not see or wind the birds. Quinn is now 4 months old and I would appreciate any comments as to how I should procede with the introduction of birds. |

It sounds to me like you are on the right track. Just keep taking 'the walk' in areas where your pup may encounter birds in their natural habitat. Don't stress if he doesn't notice every bird you encounter (its happened to me lots of times).
If you desire more bird contacts than nature can provide, I would suggest finding good flying pen raised birds and releasing them (not dizzying them) into the field prior to your walk and increasing your pups chances for an encounter.
Good luck! |

| Hi Rob
Have you had any success with the carding of released birds or is this a practise that I should not try.
Thanks again for the great advice and I'll keep plugging along

How was he introduced to pigeons? Did you plant the bird? put it to sleep? If it were me I would get a couple of birds put them in a field and bring the dog in on the side of the scent cone at 6 to 7 feet from the bird let him smell the bird and see what happens! He is a puppy and once he finds out what birds are and that taste in his mouth, and he will be hooked forever!!!! |

| I've never carded a bird before. I usually use quail that recall well, but when I use chukar or pheasant, it's usually a one time encounter (although I do have quite a nice population of pheasant and chukar from bird I've released in the past). |

| Whatever you do, don't get discouraged. My pup didn't really start pointing until after a year old, and after encountering tons of birds in a lot of different locations. I was starting to think that maybe she wouldn't point, but that all changed when she started seeing a lot more birds.

Since you've got a good place with wild grouse, you should just keep after em. I sure wouldn't mess with poultry when you've found the real deal.
Nothing replaces training on wild birds! |

Thanks for all the great information guys! I am trying to follow Julies book as closely as possible. Quinn is really doing a good job with distance and inquisitiveness. The other day I again took him for his walk. We put up two grouse and this time he went a bit birdy just before the bird took flight and was very responsive. I think I may have to train myself to be a bit more patient.
Cheers! |
