Cricket is getting close to successful completion of FF. Next we will begin collar conditioning. Then it will be back to fields for some upland work. Rob

01/13/2008 9:35 AM Alert
She turned 8 months old last week (Jan 8th). She's weighing in at about 40lbs and I think its all legs! She runs like a gazelle!!!

I pulled her out of the upland field about two months ago due to control issues. We started her formal OB and then moved to FF. I hopefully will complete that this week and then its off to CC. I was getting some really nice points out of her before she discovered the flush and chase!

Here is a funny story that hopefully someone smarter than me can learn from...

About a month ago I was feeling guilty about keeping her off of birds for so long. We had been progressing really well with OB so I brought home 3 chukar from the hunt club where Mav and I have been guiding...

After I released the first chukar, I went a got Cricket from my truck. She immediately bolted from the truck bed, into the field like a bat out of hell and proceed to hunt at about Mach 1 until she flushed the chukar and chased it to the next county! I finally got her corralled and back in the truck (without the bird).

Lesson #1: She's not ready for this I need to pack it up for day.

I did mention that I bought 3 chukar didn't I? Did I also mention that I'm not to smart when it comes to lessons?

I then proceeded to release chukar #2, but this time I put the 50ft check cord on her (sorry Julie). She actually scented the next bird and went on a very nice point about 15' back from the bird. I wisely stepped on her checkcord and sent my son in for the flush. The bird flushed nicely and I shot it. Then Cricket proceeded with a textbook retrieve to hand!

Lesson #2: Quit when your ahead.

Bird #3 went very similar to #2, with the exception that I missed the bird and I forgot to step on the checkcord! (You didn't think I'd really quit, did you? I told you I had 3 chukar right?). She chased that bird to the Utah state line! I lost sight of her entirely as she crested the horizon. After about two minutes I decided to go look for her. About that time I see a little black dot running over the hill towards me. As she approached I saw that she had something in her mouth. She retrieved that chukar to me and there wasn't a scratch on it! I praised the heck out of her (for her retrieve), cussed myself for pushing it too far and told myself she won't see another bird until OB, FF and CC are 100% complete.

We'll see how that goes

Lesson #3: Don't be too eager to push your pup beyond their capabilities (it's not a race.).

Hopefully some of you can learn from my mistakes.

Rob

Yep- mine turned 8mo on Jan 13th. I have really enjoyed the "gazelle" stage-or as I been saying Antelope look! -Somehow I got lucky and achieved a sort of puppy de chased status with my little stinker before he got big enough to hit that 'Antelope' mode. So I have been able to hunt him unrestrained with the old dog. When we get a hen up I yell "hen-no bird" and he would take a couple steps and then stop and watch it. BUT-I know he will need de chase trained formally-last time out he broke after watching it fly and it took some real yelling for him to turn back-but at least he did. It was definately time for him to go to school. I think we all do # 1 thru 3 above-we just have to see what will happen ;)

Rob, NO WORRIES!!! That sounds like what Jake did (chased a rooster over half mile and caught it and brought it back!) at 4 months. That is just pure drive. Sounds like they are related.... I use the leed to, Dont want them crashing in and catching it!! That is the way alot of pointer trainers do it! Kevin

I'm reluctant to use a lead in the field. I try to let the dog do whatever it naturally wants to do. In this case I was using the lead to try and prevent the chase, but it only works if your holding onto it! Since she's a half sister to Snakey Jake, they must get the prey drive from Jesse huh?

Yep, That goes back to FC AFC Teddys Ebonstar James Who was an absolute fireball!! But his owner was what they call in the FT game a grinder.. were I believe he could have been alot more maybe a NFC! He reached his peak early then because of to much pressure kinda caved in!! (This is what I have been told from someone with first hand knowledge)!

Interesting about the bird marking thing. I have heard of several instances where these Jesse pups have done some incredible things. A friend of Kevin's, Tom, has told me about several of his experiences with his Delta x Jesse pup. Slamming nice points and retreives her first pheasant hunt in South Dakota. The last one was a leaking goose at about a half section in distance, well over 500 yards, across three ditches and comes back to Tom with a ten pound goose. Tom said he watched his dog Molly watch the bird go down and sent her. He said the three other people in the blind said no way is that little dog going to pickup that goose. Tom told them we'll see. One of the guys said he would go out and help her. No need as Molly came barreling past him on the way back with the bird. That is a pup that just turned a year old. He said he had to use binoculars just to see her. He mentioned that the most impressive thing is that she hammered the goose and came all the way back without dropping it. Phone calls about hunts like that makes the efforts worth it. Experiences for a lifetime. Are we not lucky to have the dogs be a part of our life.

Hold onto your hat Rob, Go C dog. Keep up the good work.

Gary,

I'm looking forward to seeing some big things from this little dog! She has a very special personality. It seems that no matter what we are working on, she can always put a big smile on my face. It's been a pleasure working with her! You 'done good with this one!

Hey Rob, Haven't talked to you in a while. Just saw your newest pup on the site, and thought I would say hello. She looks great. Just recently put a deposit down on one of my own. Drop me a line if you get a chance.
