I'd start going on the "walk". Find a safe open space (field) that you can set the pup down and just walk. Do this daily for about 10 to 15 minutes and then increase the time as the pup grows begins to build endurance. The "walk" is mentioned in Julies book, but its a great place to start with a new pup.
I've personally see the difference between pups that did this and ones that didn't and believe me...you'll be thankful you did. Unless you like a dog that doesn't move from your side on a hunt. ;)

I second what Rob G said. One of my retriever training partners and her husband have FT bred Labs and do nothing but agility and hunt test events. Their dogs never hunt.
They just recently bought a pup. I told them about "The Walk" and Julie's book. The pup went through a religious "Walk" routine. They are absolutely thrilled with the results.
I used it on my last four pups and am convinced "The Walk" makes a huge, life-long difference. |

Oh yea! Crate training it's started! I never imagined labs had lungs like this little girl she's quite the chop mouth as my husband says about his mountain curs. She has not messed in her crate once but she doesn't like it in there. I will start the walks! thanks Michelle |

| Not to be a broken record, but I wish I had known about the walk when I was running english setters. It seems to do wonders with bonding as well as many of the other issues you sometimes experience with bird dogs. Range, ob etc. Check out kwiks site as there is alot of info on there as well as some of the other retriever training sites. Ive also really liked using the two Danny Farmer videos and the books by jim spencer. Good luck. |

| Ok one more question? Winter really cold here how do you introduce water at this time of year? Although she will get right in the shower as many times a day as you would like her too! |

| Make all "first experiences" with something positive! Thus, introduce her to water when she is hot, adn the water is warm. Wait to summer, this is critical. First introduction to birds, let her have fun, don't say anything, and don't "be yanking on any checkcords."
I think it is critical to teach dogs that NILIF, or nothing in life is free. Or, get what you want first, then get what she wants. Or, beforee you give her a reward, maker her earn it. She want to be petted, you have sit first. You want to eat, you have to sit first. You want to be let out of your crate, you have to give me a down first, and so forth.
