Birds , birds, birds. there is no other way.

When developing drive or 'building drive'or'putting go' in a dog your only concern is just that drive. Pointing, retrieveing steadiness, obediance they are for later or are to be completly seperate from early bird work.
once developed it can never be taken away.

GOOD LUCK!!!

We started putting Star on birds a few weeks ago, She started out in the field just like a casual walk with a fifty foot cord! Told her hunt em up and tried to get her to quarter back and forth went into the bird caught the scent one time and she turned into (JAKE) when he was that age! Now she knows what huntem up means!! I agree put your dog on birds and the pray drive should develop! and have fun with it,and if you bring her in and she points then shoot the bird for her or him!!! We are putting her on birds about 5 days a week right now!! Kevin

I would say, birds, birds and then NO birds for several outings. If a dog finds birds everytime time out, they don't develop the drive to push.

Get em birdy them run em without birds to bring out the drive....or work em on wild birds where they have to push to find them!

Guys- I am not sure the Duke's question is fully answered. The unaminous response is "birds" - But do you with experience have any tips on what to do with the "Birds" to help the dog aquire "Bird Drive"

Duke- How old is your pup? And what does it do right now if exposed to a bird??

Trout, I really like that idea!! So not finding a bird will make them push harder to find them? even without ending with success? Kevin

Maybe DukeJ8 really means pups...

When Shadow was pregnant she walked with us frequently for exercise. She occassionally encountered a spruce grouse on these walks and "worked" those. A few days before she whelped, we put her behind the back seat of the Citabria and flew 25 miles up the bay to a marsh/mud flat area. We put her out and let her chase the ducks resting on the gravel bars until they all left. When the pups were five or six days old we threw a ptarmigan wing into the whelping box for them to mess with however they wanted. We did that more or less regularly as they grew. At five weeks of age or so, we brought a shackled pigeon into the kitchen and let them chase and harass it all they wanted. We repeated this several times until all the pups but Tucker left for new homes at seven weeks. Tucker never has had any shortage of "bird drive."

Yes Kevin not finding a bird will push them harder. You don’t find birds in every field when out hunting. You sure don’t want a dog that quits after 30 minutes because it hasn’t found the easy birds it accustomed to finding.

You need to get them fired up about birds first, then back off. I see you are getting your new pup on birds 5 days a week. And the drive to find them has been established. On your next outing, do everything the same except put out no birds. If you’ve been running her for 30 minutes, run her for 30 minutes. Do this a couple of times and then take an outing to E. CO just like you were hunting. If you get some bird encounters great, if not you’ve had a good outing, and your pup had a practice run on the real thing (hunting) in a different and uncontrolled environment. If you find birds, all the better and there is no better time than now. The wheat is cut, the young pheasant are in groups and hold reasonably well for a young dog. If you don’t find birds after a walk or two and want a bird encounter. Drive the dirt roads, the hens take the chicks to the roads for dusting, grit and insects. Spot some birds, park the truck and get out your dog. You need to be there at first light, the rewards are bountiful!

Or try along the Platte, there are numerous public spots all the way to the state line. Quail in most of them and phez scattered. You both will reap the rewards come fall. I’ve hit em all and found birds at one time or another in each one of them. Go up above Georgetown or around Central City to search for grouse. Above Brainerd Lake for Ptarmigan. You won’t find birds every time or each outing, but you will build the drive in your dog to search for them.

Sit at a warm water slough at first light with your duck call and put out some decoys. There is nothing that comes close to preparing a young dog for the hunting season like practicing in natural settings on wild birds. You can always go back to planting birds to break them or prepare for test and trails. I like to bring them along at their own pace and let them develop and learn the ropes with as little intervention as possible.

Try the before birth stuff too.  You have nothing to lose.

Randy, now you're going too far:  Giving away the deep dark secrete techniques AND the places to hunt

Darn, I REALLY have owed you an email for a long time

I'll try and correct that soon.

I know Jere, but a guy still has to get out and do the leg work, knock on some doors and take good notes. Some farmers like a bottle of whisky, others favor homemade cookies or brownies. There sure a lot easier to talk to and line up now than during the season.
