I posted this yesterday...but because of technical difficulties...it had to be deleted...

I've been reading "Smart Works" by Even Graham the last couple of nights...and I have to admit...I've been struggling at times to understand exactly what he is talking about especially some of the terminology...(some times you folks speak in a foriegn language).

I finally noticed the "glossory" in the back of the book...and now have been studying it to help me get a better grasp of what he his trying to teach me...(I never said I was the smartest kid my momma ever raised)

I'm wondering if this site shouldn't have a glossory of training terms for the other people like me..who come here for training tips...but dont have a clue of what a "cast" is...or "apex"...or "poison bird"....or why the heck do you need "stickmen"?????

Just and idea to kick around...

Stu,  your post looks much better today!  Dont know what happened yesterday.

If you want to put together the glossary of terms I will sticky it at the top of the Training Forum for all to view.  I agree it can take a while to catch on to FF, TT, CC etc.

Hey Stu,

You could just save yourself the work and just look at the one listed on the MN PL site you are a member of!

Hey Stu-

I dunno what I was thinking... but i couldn't find it when I went back there. I remember reading it, however... it's a good question I should ask Josh.

Joe..Im not so sure it was a great idea...more an act of desperation....

Question to those who have read the "smart works"...

page 61...Evan goes from patterns....to steadying....ie...honoring another dog...if I read that right...than onto marks....how does one teach a dog to honor...when you only have one dog to work with????...this is one of those area's I was talking about that confused me...

Stu, you could just go out and pick up a few of the bumpers yourself.  Make sure you firm up your OB and hold first........you wouldn't want to set a poor example. Also, use different "release" words at the line.  I just did a steadying drill with Daisy the other day, and I say other words for proofing steadiness.

I can hear you now.....barking out "STU!" and off you go for a retrieve.
Hopefully, on the way back your pup won't be "rolling on the ground" laughing.

However, I am serious about  giving multiple release commands at the line and picking some marks up yourself.  The concept is called " the no retrieve".  Or better yet teaching your dog "ready, set, tell me when".

Here's a picture of Kooly, Daisy & Taffey in a steadying drill.

Jim...

Does this mean I need a place board for me too???

geesh...I can see the neighbors calling the guys with the straight jackets...as they watch me send myself off to retrieve....while the dog sits there watching....

another question...I'm going to have to buy a dozen bumpers...what should I do with them ...so they dont smell like new bumpers???

"Does this mean I need a place board for me too???"

If you are married, you already know your place.

"geesh...I can see the neighbors calling the guys with the straight jackets...as they watch me send myself off to retrieve....while the dog sits there watching...."

If it makes you feel any better, I came home from a Saturday HRC hunt test knowing Taffey had to run the Sunday water series out of a punt boat. She was young and I had not fully covered every possibility. That night I was sitting on a  bucket in a "kiddy pool" with my gun in hand while the grandchildren were throwing short marks......in my front yard. Who cares if your neighbors know you are maybe more than a "half a bubble off plumb"?

"another question...I'm going to have to buy a dozen bumpers...what should I do with them ...so they dont smell like new bumpers???"

Use them.

You should post a pic of you on the bucket in the kiddy pool on your website...title it "creative training exercise"
